Houston girls hoops star scores 64 and 48 points in a week

It's always impressive when a player racks up 100 points in a week's worth of games. What Worthing (Texas) High senior Jenzel Nash did goes beyond that: She scored 112 points in just two games, racking up a rare triple-double of 48 points, 18 steals, five rebounds and 13 assists in the second victory.

While 18 steals in a single game are enough to earn headlines alone, it was Nash's 64-point, 12-rebound, nine-assist and nine-steal performance in an 84-38 win over Washington (Texas) High that grabbed a majority of her regional attention. According to the Houston Chronicle, Nash -- who wears number 24 in white in the video above -- didn't even realize how impressive her performance had been until she was pulled from the victory with just under two minutes remaining.

"I had no idea," Nash told the Chronicle. "I knew I had played well, but I didn't know I scored that many points.

"I think it's really cool that I scored that much, but I don't know if I can beat that. It was fun, though. I wish I could have had one more steal and one more assist, though."

It's worth noting that most high school girls teams don't score 64 points in a victory, let alone have a player rack up that total. In fact, many entire games don't feature 64 points. There are plenty of 32-30 final scores.

Yet Nash is not a typical girls basketball player, either. The senior scored 59 points in a victory earlier this season and was averaging 40 points per game before her 48-point outburst.

A big part of her scoring proficiency comes from her penchant for finishing off fast breaks that she creates with her own aggressive defense. In her 64-point performance, Nash followed each of her steals with a layup, and also added three 3-pointers.

"I have worked on finishing on those fast breaks, and I just had a lot the other night," Nash told the Chronicle. "I think I just have become a little smoother this year and better at finishing on fast breaks. I've been having fun out there."

It's not surprising that Nash is having fun while scoring 64 points. Most high school hoopsters would. If she continues to rack up points at her current pace, few of the team's that face off against Worthing will be nearly as pleased.
