Hail Mary as time expires earns win, escapes 10-year losing streak in Oregon

For nine straight years, Lake Oswego High (Lake Oswego, Ore.) had topped rival Lakeridge High (Lakeridge, Ore.) in football. It appeared to be heading for 10 in a row on Friday night, right up until there were just 5 seconds remaining on the clock. That's when Lakeridge called on higher forces and connected on a Hail Mary to wrest back the 'Civil War' title contested between the two schools.

As covered by OregonLive and filmed by OregonLive as well as fans in the crowd, Lakeridge pulled out an unlikely 20-14 victory when quarterback Eric Dungey completed a 33-yard Hail Mary pass to wideout Joe Sindlinger. By the time referees confirmed that Sindlinger came down with the ball, there was no time for Lake Oswego to return a kickoff, or for Lakeridge to attempt the extra point.

Game, set, match Lakeridge, with a final score of 20-14.

As noted by OregonLive, Lake Oswego could have pulled ahead earlier in the fourth quarter, but fumbled just outside the Lakeridge red zone. That turnover launched a long Lakeridge drive which eventually ended deep on the other side of the field, after which Lakeridge forced Lake Oswego into a three-and-out, earning it the ball back with less than a minute remaining. That set up the game's final heroics, which you can see both above and below from different angles.

There couldn't have been a more dramatic conclusion to one of the great rivalry games in the Pacific Northwest, colleges and Seahawks included.
