Former Super Bowl champion reportedly banned from coaching, attending son’s games after charging ref
A former legendary SEC running back who went on to win a Super Bowl in the NFL has allegedly been banned from coaching or even attending his son's youth football games after he charged and berated a referee who did something that seemed perfectly reasonable: Ejecting the NFL veteran's son for throwing a punch.
As first disclosed by Atlanta TV network WSB, former Georgia and Pittsburgh Steelers running back Verron Haynes was reportedly banned from coaching or attending any youth football contests in the city after a scary incident in which Haynes reportedly charged at a referee and threatened "to kick his a*&." The reason for the rage against the referee? According to eyewitnesses, he ejected Haynes' son from a game after the younger Haynes punched a fellow youth player.
WSB reported that other coaches for the third-grade team on which the younger Haynes plays held back the furious former running back when he tried to charge at referee Mike Robinson. The coach eventually turned away, but not before parents and onlookers became concerned enough about his anger that they felt necessary to call the police.
Alpharetta, Ga., officials who documented the incident told WSB that no charges will be levied against the former running back unless they were pressed by Robinson or another "victim" of the attack.
That seems unlikely, though the town took matters into its own hands by allegedly preemptively banning the former NFL player from any capacity in any future games involving his son.
"We want our coaches and our fans who attend the game to be cordial to the referees and everybody that's there," Roswell spokeswoman Julie Brechbill told WSB. "It sounds like this particular incident got out of hand and it's unfortunate."
