Canadian hockey wunderkind Connor McDavid scores subtly spectacular goal

This subtly spectacular goal in an Ontario Hockey League game on Wednesday night shows precisely why Sports Illustrated dubbed Connor McDavid "the heir to Orr, Gretzky and Crosby."

The 17-year-old Erie Otters forward's methodic stickwork made a mockery of Plymouth Whalers defenseman Alex Peters and goaltender Zack Bowman. McDavid tallied three assists and just the one goal in an 11-2 win that devolved as fellow Whalers defensemen took shots at the young superstar.

McDavid made goals like this sound rather simple when asked about one of his many other highlights for an SI profile this past May: "You kind of make one move as you're thinking about the next one. You see things you can try." Mostly, the obsessively compulsive McDavid lets others do the talking for him.

"Connor is a cut above superstar," former Calgary Flames general manager and current TSN analyst Craig Button told SI when McDAvid was still just 16. "He's a franchise-defining player, the first one since Crosby. If I could pick him right now in this year's draft, I'd choose him Number 1."

Don't trust Button? How about Bobby Orr, whose agency represents McDavid: "I haven't seen someone like Connor in a long, long time. The way he sees the ice, lays passes, does so many things well."

Or perhaps Sidney Crosby, who's just a fan: "He reminded me of myself."

That he did, once again, on Wednesday night, cementing his status as the likely No. 1 NHL pick in 2015.
