Showdown, Week 22: Dustin Johnson vs. Luke Donald

So in an attempt to inject a bit more life and interest into tournaments, and because we're all inveterate gamblers who are one bad card from being out on the streets, Jay Busbee and I are playing a golf version of a football suicide pool: We each pick one golfer per tournament and see how they do against each other, straight up. Victory over the other guy gets one point, victory in the tournament gets three points, and a tie lands you half a point. (Double for the majors.) And when we burn a golfer, he's done for the year. We turn our attention to the U.S. Open.

Wall: Let me start off by saying I'm taking Lee Westwood to win the U.S. Open. But since I picked him in Showdown already, I'll roll with Luke Donald. He always seems to let me down in major championships; however, I think this year is going to be different. He's coming off a big win at the BMM PGA Championship and should be able to keep the ball in play -- he ranks fifth on tour in bogey avoidance and eighth fairways hit -- at Olympic Club. It's time to get off the major championship schnide, Luke.

Busbee: Dustin Johnson. Why? I have no idea. Perhaps it's because he's coming in hot after a long layoff. Perhaps it's because he's been here before, competing on Sunday in a major, and the fourth time is the charm. And perhaps it's because I can't quite pull the trigger on Tiger Woods just yet. Swing hard, DJ, and make me proud!

Last week: Can we just forget last week ever happened? Both Wall and Busbee's picks missed the cut last week, as Zach Johnson and Robert Karlsson failed to even show up in Memphis. What an awful way to split a point.

Current score: Busbee - 5.0, Wall - 4.0.
