John Huh’s putting together an impressive run at the Valero Texas Open
Through nine holes on Thursday morning it looked like John Huh would be on the last flight out of San Antonio on Friday evening.
The 21-year-old rookie, who won earlier this year at the Mayakoba Classic on the eighth playoff hole, failed to make a single par during his front nine, going out in 8-over 44 and putting his hopes of making the weekend at the Valero Texas Open on life support.
This is the point in the story where you'd expect Huh to shut it down and become a WD footnote. But the thing about this kid is he doesn't seem to have any quit in him. Forget just grinding to make the cut, Huh now has himself in a position to go from potential MC to two-time tour winner after putting together one of the more impressive runs we've seen this year, going bogey-free over his last 45 holes to get within five of the leaders going into the final round.
The insane stretch included an impressive 12 birdies, including back-to-back birdies to finish off a third round 67 on one of the toughest courses on the PGA Tour. And that's what makes the stretch even more incredible.
TPC San Antonio, ranked as the seventh-most difficult course on tour last season, has been an absolute monster since it took over as the home of the Valero Texas Open in 2010. Only 18 players are under par for the week, and with the winds wreaking havoc once again, you'd expect bogeys to be the norm.
Yet Huh's somehow found a way to keep the errors to a minimum following Thursday's front nine implosion. He may not end up coming back to complete one of the greatest comebacks in recent memory, but based on the way he's turned things around, you can't help but be impressed what he's doing at the moment.
