Carl Edwards says Roush is working 'smarter' on its cars
KANSAS CITY, Kan. – While Carl Edwards and Greg Biffle are both in the top 10 in the points standings, it hasn't felt like a successful season at Roush Fenway Racing.
Ricky Stenhouse Jr. is in 25th and there hasn't been a weekend of across the board success. All three cars haven't finished in the top 10 in the same race this season; the closest was Bristol, when Edwards won, Stenhouse was second and Biffle was 12th.
The team, known for its intermediate track success, hasn't had that either. The three drivers have just three top 10s on intermediate tracks this season.
"We have been working a lot and working very hard and I think working smarter," Edwards said. "Hopefully you see some of that this weekend. We unloaded and I don't want to say specifically what we have done, but we have worked on some things and the cars are a little better ... There is hope, and that is good. We have to be better at the 1.5 mile tracks and this will be a real test of our 1.5 mile program. It will let us know if the things we have been doing have been working or not."
Those unmentionable specifics are critical not only to the short-term, but also the long-term success of Roush Fenway Racing. The contracts of Biffle and Edwards are up at the end of the year.
Biffle told Motorsport.com on Friday that he had no intention of leaving the team.
“No,” Biffle said. “Not a bit. Absolutely, 100 percent, no.”
Edwards declined to talk about his contract negotiations but said the mood at Roush Fenway has changed dramatically over the past six weeks.
"We were pretty deep in the desperation portion of mood after California," Edwards said. "It was bad. There is a lot of hope right now because we have tested a bunch and worked on a bunch of things."
