Celtics ready to trade Big Three for talented youth

US Presswire

The aging Boston Celtics tried to get younger last year when it sent Kendrick Perkins and Nate Robinson to the Oklahoma City Thunder for Jeff Green (along with Nenad Krstic and a draft pick). But then he struggled while playing alongside Boston's Big Three of Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett. Then Green was diagnosed with an aortic aneurysm that will keep him out for the season.

Now the team that won it all in 2008 is struggling and Celtics vice president of basketball operations Danny Ainge is now saying that he'd "consider a major move involving the Big Three if it would help foster the team's transition to the next era," according to the Boston Globe.

"[Red Auerbach] had a chance to trade Larry [Bird to Indiana] for Chuck Person and Herb Williams and [Steve] Stipanovich, and he had a chance to trade Kevin [McHale to Dallas] for Detlef Schrempf and Sam Perkins," Ainge said Wednesday, according to the Globe. "I was like are you kidding? I mean I feel that way now. If I were presented with those kind of deals for our aging veterans, it's a done deal to continue the success."

The Celtics are currently 5-8 and a half game back from the New York Knicks for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

I agree that Red likely had a transition plan in place that didn't involve trading Larry the Legend. Recall that they had picked Len Bias #2 overall in the draft and then the kid died of drug overdose within 24 hours. That arguably cost the Celtics an additional championship.

Plus, of course, the death of Reggie Lewis - two incredibly bad losses of both the players they planned on building their '90's teams around,

exactly. the emperor has no clothes at this point. I feel Danny,Paul,Ray and Kevin all have to go. Start over by surrounding Rondo with a nucleus much like they have done for Durant in Oklahoma City. Trading Perk was a terrible move.

Perk was gonna leave at the end of the season. They wanted to at least get something for him

First of all you ain't ever gonna trade Larry Bird or Kevin McHale or Paul Pierce so Danny is full of it. It is easy to say now but Red could not do that to the fans. Its tough to watch your heroes get old but it allways happens. So when they leave you pick up the pieces and start over, like it or not...

"The aging Boston Celtics tried to get younger last year when it sent Kendrick Perkins and Nate Robinson". Tried to get younger by trading away two young players?

I don't think Danny Ainge's information was really complete or whether they were continually taken out of context. The trio of Bird, McHale and Parish were never considered for trade because Auerbach knows that the transition from one era to another rests on good moves during the drafts. Boston lost Bias and later on Lewis to further jinx the already ailing back of Bird that led to his retirement. (just read the book Let Me Tell You A Story of Red)

Trading the Big3 now would not be on the plate of Red. He would have built another dynasty using the same core but negotiating workable deals with his current Celtics. Didn't Larry Bird voluntarily cut his pay just to accomodate another good player?

Even though how ignorant Danny looks, I think this is all psy-war with their core knowing the real score. The pieces are in place.

Aside from this, the current Boston owners admire Red and they concur with their management style which is to honor loyalty and tradition.

Besides, the dark ages were more than because of player transition management

The Boston Celtics tried to get younger last year when they added Shaquille O'Neal and Jermaine O'Neal.

I AM NATIVE NEW ENGLANDER NOW LIVING IN OK. FEELING OUT HERE, CELTICS WILL PULL A BLOCK BUSTER TRADE......AND SOME PEOPLE CRY BUT THE TEAM WILL RELOAD....I THINK AT LEAST 2 OR MAYBE 3 WILL BE INVOLVED....

I think that Danny's brain is not getting enough oxygen since he had the heart trouble. Not signing Tony Allen and trading Perkins were just flat out horrible decisions. Why is he talking about the big 3 now and trading them? Why did he sign Allen and Pierce to big money deals so recently yet did not want to pay Perk. PLus GArnett at 21 million for the way is playing is a travesty.Nobody will want those guys now at the money they are making unless it is a contender who will not offer much in return. Should have kept Perk,Rondo,Tony Allen and Glen Davis together and then tried to land a big free agent or two and would be right back in the hunt.

This team hasn't been the same since Ainge traded away Perkins. Want to talk about who killed this "era", start by looking there. Ainge was a bad GM before RayRay and KG landed in his lap, and he's done nothing else to suggest he's going to "transition" this team into a new championship caliber team.

    hey ainge,
good luck trying to get anything for your "aging veterans"...if you have such a low opinion of them that kind of nixes any leverage you might have.

PP is a good chip for a team that needs a 2-3 that can get his own shot. Ray could help any team who needs a guard and is a contender. KG is the most difficult to trade. His value has gone down a lot. Best teams to deal with would be Chicago, San Antonio, Dallas and both the Clippers and Lakers. But I don't think the C's would want to help LA get banner #18 tho.
  • 2LTRN  •  3 months ago
Kind of redundant. DA has been saying this flor more than 2 weeks, more like the last year or 2. I think Jeff Green suffered from playing on a young athletic team and being traded to the C's. If we could get KG and Allen back on lesser contracts next year, use the cap space to sign a couple of young studs, trade a veteren for draft picks or young talent..... Ahhhhh thats exactly what you just said along with everyone else....This was definitely a great era for the Celtics. I enjoyed it much mor ethan the Pitino era!

I wonder how the "big three" feel about danny putting their names out there like a shopping list or blue light special?
  • Deuce  •  Dallas, Texas  •  3 months ago
Danny Ainge has no class whatsoever!! Its one thing to feel that way, but its entirely different when you tell the press. He's probably lost his team now just by running his big mouth! his days in Boston are numbered.
    • Axial 3 months ago
      Could not agree more!
    • Thomas T 3 months ago
Fire Ainge now! This guy is a legend in his own mind. If Len Bias did not die, Boston would have won a couple of more championships with those teams. The games are won by people on the court, not pawns on a chess board.
    • jay 3 months ago
perkins deal was the begining of the end for the celtics...if they stood pat might have had a good chance for 2 more titles.
  • Joe B  •  Philadelphia, Pennsylvania  •  3 months ago
Danny must be on drugs...i wouldn't have traded bird or mchale either for the stiffs they were offered, regardless of age. Your big three is now the "old three". Who is going to give you value in youth for aging players past their prime? maybe mchale can help you out again by giving away houston's players like he did for you with garnett.
  • GetWellSoon  •  San Luis Obispo, California  •  3 months ago
trade Pierce at the deadline for some young talent and a trade exception...Allen and Garnett contracts are done after this year and will open huge salary opportunity to sign free agents. Celts did it before when they picked up Allen and Garnett in the first place...can do it again next year.
