Zanesville tabs Spencer to lead girls basketball program

ZANESVILLE — Shaun Spencer was drawn to the Zanesville girls basketball head coaching job when it opened.

His vision was one Athletic Director Scott Aronhalt and Board of Education agreed with, as Spencer was recently approved to take over after the program's winningest coach Jeff Moore stepped down following last season.

"I’ve always admired the Zanesville basketball programs," Spencer said. "The only words that I can really think of to describe this feeling is grateful and blessed. I want to thank AD Coach Aronhalt, the committee and Board of Education for putting their faith in me and giving me this incredible opportunity."

The Lady Devils went 10-14 last season, falling to John Glenn in the sectional final.

Spencer was a former assistant coach for the John Glenn girls basketball team during the 2021-22 season. The Muskies reached the regional tournament and nearly knocked off state runner-up Sheridan in the regional semifinal that season.

Spencer is also a 2000 Tri-Valley graduate and a 2004 Bethany (West Virginia) College alum. He wants his players to play fast, while also believing in themselves and their abilities.

"Our goal is to establish a blue-collar, bulldog work ethic in a family atmosphere while building their skill sets and confidence, not only on the court, but in the classroom and in life," Spencer said. "I like to create a positive learning environment in practice and get the girls playing carefree. They can't be afraid to make mistakes. Mistakes can be made, we'll learn from them and get better."

Aronhalt sees plenty of positives in bringing Spencer on board, knowing a solid foundation is in place from Moore's tenure.

"Shaun is full of energy, has outstanding knowledge of the game, and has an extensive background coaching female athletes," Aronhalt said. "We believe he will incorporate many of the pillars of success that Coach Moore established as well as incorporating ideas of his own."

Zanesville should return several key contributors, while Spencer will retain Kelvin Grimmett as his associate head coach. He sees potential in the high school program and understands the importance of getting the youth involved at the lower levels.

"The program is in pretty good shape. Coach Moore didn't leave the cabinets empty," Spencer noted. "There's some great athleticism here, at the high school level down through elementary. I'm excited to meet all the volunteers and coaches at the younger levels and get fully invested with the youth."
