Yuba City swept by Inderkum to finish fourth in the CVC: Honkers miss playoffs by one position

Oct. 20—For a second straight season, the Yuba City High girls volleyball team finished in fourth place in the Capital Valley Conference and one spot out of the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs.

"It is not our time yet," Yuba City head volleyball coach Jenny Dove said.

Yuba City (11-12, 6-6 CVC) competed all season, including on senior night Thursday when it exchanged leads and forced multiple ties with third place Inderkum (24-16, 8-4) throughout the three sets before falling in straight sets (21-25, 24-26, 24-26) at home in front of a packed Brown Mob section on the campus of Yuba City High School.

"It's senior night, (an) emotional night (and) we played up at times more than we have," Dove said.

In the opening set, Yuba City was tied with Inderkum 10 times before the Tigers pulled ahead late, en route to a 25-21 win. Neither team had a lead greater than three before Inderkum won the set.

Yuba City rallied in the second to grab an early 7-3 edge then jumped ahead by a bigger advantage on a block at the net to force Inderkum to burn a timeout. The Division I-playoff bound school would own the rest of the set, winning 20 of the next 33 points to pull ahead and edge Yuba City, 26-24.

"We have to get our volleyball IQ up," Dove said. "We have to get smarter on the court. We have to look at the other side of the net. It's not just what you do, (the players) have to become a student of the game and watch what they do."

Down 2-0 in the best-of-five, Yuba City forced multiple ties early and was deadlocked with Inderkum at 12 for the fifth time in the set before the Tigers pulled ahead and eventually squeaked out another tight set, 26-24 to leave with the sweep and lock up the third playoff spot out of the CVC. Roseville, which won the league at 30-4, earned a bid alongside CVC runner-up Woodcreek.

SJS playoffs begin for all divisions on Monday at home sites.

Next year, Yuba City and River Valley transition to the Division III Foothill Valley League alongside Roseville, Del Campo, Nevada Union, Placer, and Twelve Bridges.

"It didn't get an easier," Dove said
