Yazmin Jauregui eyes Combate Global title: ‘It’s time to face ‘Super Mely”

After conquering her biggest professional feat to date, Yazmin Jauregui is ready to fight for gold.

The 22-year-old prospect won Combate Global’s women’s strawweight one-night tournament at this past Friday’s “Combate Global: Last Latina Standing” in Miami. Jauregui (8-0) outpointed Stephanie Frausto and scored first-round stoppages over Criszaida Adames and Claire Lopez to win the tournament.

Unbeaten in her MMA career and on a six-fight winning streak under the Combate Global banner, Jauregui wants the next shot at strawweight champion Melissa Martinez, and she’s hoping to get it done in 2021.

“Of course I’d like to fight for the title,” Jauregui told MMA Junkie in her native Spanish. “I think that fight has been long awaited, and I think now it’s time to face ‘Super Mely.’

“She’s a fighter with a ton of experience in kickboxing and with a high level as a martial artist. It would be a challenge for me and an honor to share the cage with her. We both know very well we’d leave everything in there, so it’s a fight many people have been waiting for, and I’m also anxious for it to happen. I want to fight for a title and, God willing, take that belt home.”

Combate Americas rebrands as Combate Global, set to make return on April 9

Jauregui trains at Tijuana’s Entram Gym under the tutelage of Raul Arvizu and alongside UFC champion Brandon Moreno.

“Combate Global: Last Latina Standing” was the first time Jauregui fought three times in one night in her young career. She said she left the tournament with good experience despite it being very physically demanding.

“I really liked the experience because you compete against three rivals who are totally different in the realm of MMA,” Jauregui explained. “They all fight differently, so that’s what I really liked. But I’m not going to lie to you, there is a bit of pressure and more nerves because you have no idea what’s going to happen.

“But the truth is that I loved it and I enjoyed it. It felt like I was fighting for a title and I took home good victories, which is what I wanted at the end of the day.”
