Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe wins Gold Glove Award

New York Yankees rookie shortstop Anthony Volpe won the American League Gold Glove Award.

Volpe is the first rookie in Yankees history to win a Gold Glove, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

He also became the youngest shortstop to ever win the award, clocking it at 72 days younger than former Detroit Tigers star Alan Trammell was when he snagged the prize in 1980.

Hall of Famer Derek Jeter won five Gold Gloves during his storied career with the Bombers.

Last year, Houston’s Jeremy Peña became the first rookie shortstop to win the award, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Prior to this season, only 15 rookies had ever won a Gold Glove.

Volpe had a .970 fielding percentage in 1,346.2 innings of work, committing only 17 errors in 157 games while accumulating 15 defensive runs saved above average. He also completed 63 double plays.

“I don’t know if I expected it to be this good,” manager Aaron Boone said of Volpe’s defense in early September. “But it is. He’s a difference-maker out there.”

At the plate, Volpe became the first Yankee to hit at least 20 home runs and steal at least 20 bases as a rookie.
