Yankees looked to sign Amed Rosario this offseason: report

Kiké Hernandez wasn’t the only infielder the Yankees were looking to sign this offseason.

report from the New York Post states that New York GM Brian Cashman tried to ink shortstop Amed Rosario.

The Post reported that Cashman got the go-ahead from Hal Steinbrenner to spend some money on infield depth, which is when they approached Hernandez. They reportedly offered Hernandez $4 million, but the utility infielder chose to go back to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Cashman pivoted to Rosario and offered the same deal, per the report. Rosario instead took $1.5 million to go to the Tampa Bay Rays. Rosario’s reps told The Post that the reason was the same as Hernandez’s -- more playing time was guaranteed elsewhere.

Rosario hit .263/.305/.378 with six home runs and 58 RBI in 142 games between the Cleveland Guardians and Dodgers last season.

The 28-year-old started his career with the Mets, spending four seasons in Flushing before being traded to Cleveland in the Francisco Lindor deal. In his four seasons with the Mets, Rosario batted .268/.302/.403 to go along with 32 home runs and 148 RBI.

Of course, this news comes at a time when Oswald Peraza was the presumptive infield bench player to break camp, but the 23-year-old is currently dealing with shoulder discomfort, which could cost him his roster spot.
