Freemantle originally suffered the injury on Jan. 28 against Creighton and underwent season-ending surgery in March. He announced he'd return to Xavier for a fifth season in April.

Xavier head coach Sean Miller originally anticipated that Freemantle would be available at the end of August. A report from Jeff Goodman said that the foot hadn't progressed and another surgery would be needed and it's likely to keep him sidelined until January, if not the entire season.

Freemantle averaged 15.2 points and 8.1 rebounds last season for the Musketeers.
