Trip Freitag and Lucas Velando, Manville: The scenario couldn’t have been set up better for the Mustangs. Manville needed wins in its last two bouts against Pingry. It just so happened the Mustangs’ two Somerset County Tournament finalists were on tap. Velando got a pin in 22 seconds at 175 and Freitag closed with a fall in 3:21 at 190 for the 40-37 Manville win.

Trip Freitag (Manville Hs) won by decision over Alexander Muntyan (Ridge) in the 190 lb. weight class on Jan. 5, 2024 evening at the East Brunswick High School gymnasium in East Brunswick.

Tyler Hays, Bound Brook: The senior 157-pounder earned two pins as the Crusaders swept a tri-meet with wins over Dover and Dwight Morrow. That gave Hays 20 victories on the season.

Nick Villani, Bernards: It very well could have been a Somerset County Tournament final. Villani won the 144-pound title, but Montgomery’s talented Jackson Obe missed the SCT with an injury. They finally met Saturday and Villani got the 6-4 win.

Franklin needed some late magic against Pingry and the big guys delivered. Jason Peters (175), Saadiq Taylor (215) and Evan Hartel (285) all got pins in the final four matches as the Warriors earned the 42-39 win over the Big Blue.

Voorhees trailed 33-19 against Demarest entering the final four matches – with two tossups. The Vikings came through by sweeping all four matches to earn the 37-33 team win. Trevor Zabroski (215) got a pin followed by Cameron Baumann (285) winning 5-1, Tyler Ondovi (106) with a fall and Johnny D`Andrea finishing with a 5-4 win.
