Wrestling roundup: Willmar Cardinals wrap up Christmas tourney in 16th

Dec. 17—ROCHESTER — Led by Conlan and Cavin Carlson, the Willmar wrestling team finished in 16th-place at the 40-team MatBoss Minnesota Christmas Tournament.

The Cardinals scored 112.5 points over the two-day tournament that concluded Saturday at the Mayo Civic Center.

Mounds View won with 300.5, followed by SImley's 275.5 and St. Michael-Albertville's 260.

Conlan had Willmar's top-finish with a fourth-place showing in the 145-pound bracket. Cavin was fifth at 133. Both went 4-2 over the tournament.

Steven Cruze also finished in the top 10, placing ninth at 172 with a 5-2 record.

Willmar competes at the Rumble on the Red on Dec. 28-29 at the Fargodome in Fargo, North Dakota.

Marshall edged Section 3AA rival Dawson-Boyd/Lac qui Parle Valley/Montevideo for the team title at the Redwood River Riot at Redwood Falls.

The Tigers wrapped up the two-day tournament with 163.5 points to the United's 159.5. Thirty-six teams competed in the tournament.

Daniel Gunlogson won the 145-pound championship for United after pinning BOLD's Brady Kiecker in the first-place match at 3 minutes. Eli Olson (107) and Ben Gunlogson (127) also made the finals for United. Olson dropped a 9-3 decision to Maple River/United South Central's Noah Gonzalez. Ben dropped a 16-2 major decision to Holdingford's Wyatt Novitzki.

Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg made the top 10, placing ninth with 88.5. The Fighting Saints' Trey Gunderson won the 133 bracket with a 5-2 decision over Devin Carter of Tracy-Milroy-Balaton/Westbrook-Walnut Grove.

BOLD's Austin Kiecker claimed the 152 title following a 6-1 decision over Holdingford's William Pilarski. Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City's Isaiah Renne was the runner-up at 215, losing to TMB/WWG's Eathan Martinez in an 11-9 decision.

With Ryan Jensen and Maximus Hanson each winning their respective brackets, Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa placed second at the Jackhammer Invitational at Pequot Lakes.

The Jaguars' 187.5 points trailed only Totino-Grace, which won with 209.5.

Jensen was the 139-pound champ after pinning Hutchinson's Max Martin in 1:22 in the finals. Hanson also won by fall in the 172 final, beating Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Browerville's Mason Bruder in 3:36. Brett DeRoo also made a final for BBE, losing the 152 title to Perham's Carson Byer in a 5-2 decision.

Paynesville placed 13th as a team with 77 points. The Bulldogs' Roman Roberg was the 114 champion after an 8-7 decision over LPGE/Browerville's Hunter Katterhagen.

Minnewaska placed 15th with 64. The Lakers' Miles Wildman reached the 121 finals, losing an 11-3 major decision to Totino-Grace's Jackson Refsnider.

Benson's 83 points was good for eighth place at the 17-team Monticello Invitational.

Royalton/Upsala won the team championship with 198, beating South St. Paul's 150.

Gavin Olson was the Braves' top wrestler after going 2-1 for a second-place finish at 114 pounds. He lost a 4-2 decision to Mahnomen-Waubun's Dominick Neisen in the finals.

Nick Bolduc added a third-place finish for Benson at 160.

Three New London-Spicer wrestlers went 4-0 over four matches at the Osceola Duals in Osceola, Wisconsin.

The Wildcats were 2-2, with wins over Cumberland and Barron. NLS also adjusted to Wisconsin's 14 weight classes compared to 13 in Minnesota.

Isaiah Nelson (138 pounds), Adam Sandau (165) and Marshel Johnson (285) all went undefeated for NLS.

The Quad County Cobras finished 4-1 at the Top the Tree Duals in Luverne.

Quad County beat Chester, South Dakota, Ortonville, Springfield and Viborg-Hurley/Irene-Wakonda, South Dakota.

The Cobras' top wrestler was Jasen Jansen, who went a combined 5-0 at 215 and 285 pounds.
