WNC spring sports Week 11 top performers from first round of baseball, softball playoffs

Here are the Western North Carolina athletes who had top performances this week in spring sports.

This list is compiled from information provided to the Citizen Times (sports@citizentimes.com) or posted on MaxPreps or social media. It will be updated throughout the week.

Saturday

Track and field

Logan Shuler, Andrews: Shuler jumped a mark of 6 feet, 4 inches to claim the 1A West Regional boys high jump title.

Samuel Preston, Andrews: Preston claimed the regional title in both the long jump and the triple jump.

Michael Haskin, Asheville High: Haskin finished first in the 3,200-meter run at the boys 4A West Regional with a time of 9:21.93.

Aris Joyner, Asheville High: Joyner jumped 6 feet, 6 inches at to win the high jump by four inches.

Sofi Alexander, Asheville High: Alexander won the 1,600-meter run at the girls 4A West Regional with a time of 5:11.76. She also finished second in the 3,200-meter run.

Renn Herdklotz, Avery County: The senior took first place in the 400-meter dash at the girls 1A West Regional by half a second.

Maddy Barrett, Avery County: Barrett's time of 44.99 seconds earned her first place in the 300-meter hurdles.

Abby Burleson, Avery County: Burleson won the pole vault with a mark of 11 feet, six inches.

Alex Newman, Brevard: Newman won the boys 2A West Regional discus with a throw of 139 feet.

Tyana Crite, Brevard: The sophomore won the girls 2A West Regional 100-meter dash with a time of 12.59.

Joss Stamper, Cherokee: Stamper's discuss throw of 120 feet, 11 inches broke her mom's school record and earned her the 1A West Regional girls discus title.

Josh Flack, Enka: Flack took the boys 3A West Regional high jump title with a 6-foot, 4-inch jump.

Graham Cannon, Enka: Cannon won the discus finals by less than a foot with his throw of 166-05.00. He finished in second in shotput, missing first place by one inch.

Boston Stringer, Franklin: Stringer won the pole vault with a jump of 11 feet, 6 inches, helping Franklin with the girls 3A West Regional title.

Justin Rodriguez, Franklin: Rodriguez narrowly took first place in the boys 3A West Regional 400-meter dash with a time of 49.64.

Dylan Dahlberg, Mountain Heritage: With a time of 50.51, Dahlberg took first place in the 400-meter dash at the 1A West Regional boys track meet.

Sophia Banks, North Buncombe: Banks won the girls 400-meter dash at the 3A West Regional with a time of 57.14, helping North Buncombe finish second in the meet.

Eden Barnwell, North Buncombe: Barnwell finished in first place in the girls 800-meter run.

Trevae Woodyard, Owen: Woodyard finished in first in the 100-meter dash at the boys 2A West Regional with a time of 10.73.

Ashley Currie, Owen: Currie won the 200-meter dash at the girls 2A West Regional.

Sierra Honeycutt, Owen: Honeycutt's mark of 5 feet, 2 inches in the high jump earned her a first-place mark.

Jaylee Montieth, Reynolds: The freshman took first place in the high jump at the girls 3A West Regional with a mark of 5 feet, 4 inches.

Zoie Shuler, Robbinsville: Shuler swept the jumping events at the girls 1A West Regional, taking first place in the high jump, long jump and triple jump.

Will Fiore, Roberson: Fiore won the 1,600-meter run at the boys 4A West Regional with a time of 4:21.94.

Nse Uffort, Swain County: Uffort took first in both throwing events at the boys 1A West Regional, winning shotput by over 10 feet and discus by nearly 35 feet.

Annie Lewis, Swain County: Lewis won the 1A West Regional girls 800-meter run with a time of 2:15.09, almost two seconds better than the second-place finisher, to help Swain County win the meet.

Arizona Blankenship, Swain County: Blankenship won the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter runs with plenty of distance between her and the competition – roughly 15 seconds in each.

Samantha Woodard, Swain County: Woodard claimed the girls shot put title with a throw of 37 feet, one inch.

Hudson Rice, West Henderson: Rice took first place in the 1,600-meter run and the 3,200-meter run at the boys 3A West Regional, helping the Falcons win the meet.

Tayman Howell, West Henderson: Howell won the 110-meter hurdles, narrowly defeating his teammate with a time of 13.96. He also took the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 38.10.

Emma Hall, West Henderson: Hall won the girls 100-meter hurdles at the 3A West Regional with a time of 14.18, then took first in the 300-meter hurdles with a mark of 45.30.

Friday

Baseball

Carter Bennett, Mountain Heritage: Bennett went 4⅔ innings after getting the start against Hayesville. He struck out four and allowed four hits and one unearned run in a 6-2 win to advance to the third round of the 1A playoffs.

Cade Gardner, Reynolds: Gardner homered and drove home two runs, but the Rockets lost 12-5 to Oak Grove in the second round of the 3A playoffs.

Micah Simpson, Roberson: Simpson threw a complete game, allowing three hits and two unearned runs while striking out three. Roberson beat Weddington 4-2 in the second round of the 4A playoffs. He also doubled and drove home two at the plate.

Bradyn Cockrell, Tuscola: Cockrell went five innings on the mound, striking out five and allowing three hits. He gave up no earned runs in the 4-2 win over Rockingham County in the second round of the 3A playoffs.

Amos Rich, Tuscola: Rich drove in two runs on a single in the third inning, which proved to be the difference in the win.

Jackson Lynn, West Henderson: Lynn went 2-for-3 with a home run in the sixth inning, driving in three runs on the day in an 8-2 win over North Lincoln in the second round of the 3A playoffs.

Truitt Manuel, West Henderson: Manuel went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs, then threw a shutout inning on the mound to close down the win.

Softball

Carrie Gunter, Madison: Gunter went six innings in Madison's 13-1 mercy rule win over Brevard in the second round of the 2A playoffs, striking out two and giving up one unearned run.

Rylee Plemmons, Madison: Plemmons drove in two runs and went 2-for-4 for the Patriots.

Addison Staton, McDowell: Staton hit two solo home runs to help power the Titans' offensive breakout in a 17-2 win over Myers Park in the second round of the 4A playoffs.

Emma Washburn, McDowell: The senior drove home four runs, including the de facto walk off run in the fourth inning.

Mia Roland, Owen: Roland hit a walk off grand slam to send Owen past Bunker Hill, 6-2 in the second round of the 2A playoffs. She also tripled and went 3-for-4 at the plate.

Jordan Dorsey, Reynolds: Dorsey homered and drove home three runs amid a 3-for-4 day at the plate. She led the Rockets to a 14-13 win over Ashe County to advance to the third round of the 3A playoffs.

Kadyn Williams, Reynolds: The freshman went 2-for-5 with a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored in the win.

Aubrey Treadway, Reynolds: Treadway hit a home run and scored three times. She had two RBIs on the day.

Memory Frapp, Robbinsville: Frapp homered and drove in four runs in a 3-for-3 day, lifting Robbinsville to a 12-6 second round win over Murphy.

Dreylee Webster, Robbinsville: Webster drove in three runs while going 2-for-4 at the plate with a double.

Boys tennis

Hank Walker, North Buncombe: Walker won his No. 1 singles match, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, and won his No. 1 doubles match 8-1 to help North Buncombe beat Central Davidson, 6-3, and advance to the fourth round of the 3A playoffs for the first time in program history.

Derek Gilliland, North Buncombe: Gilliland won at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-0, and won alongside Walker in the No. 1 doubles match.

William Jones, North Buncombe: Jones took his match at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-2, and helped the Black Hawks win the doubles point by winning 8-3 at No. 2 doubles.

Oliver Manske, North Buncombe: Manske teamed up with Jones to win the No. 2 doubles match and earned a point at No. 4 singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win.

Conner McCrain, West Henderson: The junior won a tightly contested match at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), (10-8), and helped win his No. 3 doubles match 8-2 to lead West Henderson to a 5-4 win over Lake Norman Charter.

Thursday

Baseball

Seth Coxie, Asheville Christian Academy: Coxie went 4-for-4 at the plate, driving in four runs in a 10-2 win over Calvary Day School. He also struck out five in two hitless innings on the mound.

Girls soccer

Maddie Beene, Madison: Beene made eight saves to preserve the shutout in a 1-0 win over Enka.

Amber Hernandez, Madison: Hernandez scored the game winning goal in the first half.

Casiah Cordell, North Henderson: The junior recorded a brace to help lift North Henderson to a 4-0 shutout win over Pisgah.

Jaylee Monteith, Reynolds: The freshman scored a hat trick for the Rockets in a 5-0 win over McDowell.

Mya Burrows-Kurr, Swain County: The junior scored four goals and assisted on three in a 9-4 win over Highlands.

Karena Cline, Swain County: Cline had a hat trick and five assists in the victory over the Highlanders.

Marianne Maxon, West Henderson: Maxon scored two goals and assisted two more to help the Falcons beat Tuscola, 6-0.

Wednesday

Baseball

Deegan Randall, Enka: Randall threw six innings for the Jets, striking out 11, giving up six hits and allowing only one run as Enka upset Ledford, 4-2.

Ty Aycock, Enka: Aycock went two for three and drove in the third of Enka's four runs in the fourth inning.

Ethan Orr, Robbinsville: Orr struck out eight and gave up four hits in six innings, He only allowed one run, but the Black Knights were no-hit and lost 1-0.

Girls soccer

Peyton Case, Asheville High: Case recorded two goals in Asheville's 5-1 win over Enka, securing a share of the Mountain Athletic Conference title.

Mya Burrows-Kurr, Swain County: Burrows-Kurr helped a dominant Swain County offense to a 9-0 victory over Hayesville with a hat trick and five assists.

Karena Cline, Swain County: Cline proved just as prolific as her teammate with three goals and four assists.

Tuesday

Baseball

Carter Burnette, Asheville High: Burnette drove in three runs to lead the Cougars past Ardrey Kell, 7-1, in the first round of the 4A playoffs. He also struck out four in 3⅔ innings pitched, allowing three hits to earn the win.

Manning Stewart, Carolina Day: Stewart went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored, leading the offense in a 15-5 mercy rule win over Statesville Christian in the NCISAA playoffs.

Sterling Haynes, Carolina Day: Haynes went 3-for-4 with a double and drove in two runs for the Wildcats.

Cade Caruso, Hayesville: Caruso drove in two runs, including a run in Hayesville's six-run sixth inning as they defeated Bethany Community in the first round of the 1A playoffs, 11-6.

Chance Hughes, Hayesville: Hughes went 3-for-4 and scored twice in the win.

CJ Burleson, Mountain Heritage: Burleson went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored to pace the Cougars' offense in a 7-0 win over Piedmont Community Charter in the first round of the 1A playoffs.

Lane Chandler, Mountain Heritage: Chandler threw a complete game shutout with three strikeouts and four hits allowed.

Braden Surrett, Pisgah: Surrett pitched six innings in relief after entering the game in the ninth inning of Pisgah's marathon 15-inning loss to Rockingham County, 4-3, in the 3A playoffs. He struck out six batters and gave up four hits in the loss, throwing 104 pitches in relief.

Zackary Wester, Pisgah: Wester pitched seven innings without allowing a run to help Pisgah reach extra innings, striking out nine and giving up seven hits.

Isaiah Mintz, Pisgah: Mintz went 3-for-5 and walked three times. He drove in the tying run in the top of the seventh inning.

Lawson Carter, Polk County: Carter homered in the first inning and drove in four runs on the day, delivering the Wolverines their first playoff win since 2019 in a 7-4 victory over South Stanly.

Luke Nesbitt, Reynolds: Nesbitt homered and drove in three runs at the plate and struck out four in four innings pitched in the 6-2 win over Hibriten in the first round of the 3A playoffs.

Reno Jeter, Roberson: Jeter struck out eight batters over six innings, allowing two hits and no runs in a 6-0 win over Northern Guilford to advance to the second round of the playoffs.

Jake Parham, Roberson: Parham homered in the third inning of the win.

Corey Stilwell, Swain County: Stilwell doubled and drove in two runs in the second inning of Swain County's 4-3 win over North Stokes in the first round of the 1A playoffs.

Will Holden, Swain County: Holden singled in the bottom of the seventh to bring home the walk-off run and send the Maroon Devils into the second round.

Kolt Nelson, Tuscola: Nelson went 4-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs to help the Mountaineers beat Stuart W. Cramer by mercy rule, 11-1, in the first round of the 3A playoffs.

Amos Rich, Tuscola: Rich struck out 10 batters, allowing two hits and one run in six innings. He also went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Mason Coren, West Henderson: Coren pitched six innings in a 3-0 win over Asheboro, allowing just four hits and striking out two to send the Falcons onto the second round of the 3A playoffs.

Truitt Manuel, West Henderson: Manuel went 1-for-3 with an RBI at the plate and struck out all three batters he faced in the seventh inning to earn the save.

Softball

Claire Wilson, Brevard: Wilson went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored to help Brevard engineer a comeback 7-2 win over Pine Lake Prep in the 2A playoffs.

Ava Rogers, Brevard: Rogers went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to help the Blue Devils move on to the second round.

Karly Presnell, Enka: Presnell struck out eight batters in seven innings, allowing only two hits to lead the Sugar Jets to a 1-0 win over North Lincoln in the first round of the 3A playoffs.

Addie Sams, Madison: Sams doubled in the seventh, bringing home the go-ahead run and capping off Madison's comeback 4-3 upset win over West Davidson in the first round of the 2A playoffs.

Miranda Wall, McDowell: The catcher hit a two-run home run in the third inning of McDowell's 4-1 first round win over Northern Guilford, 4-1, in the 4A playoffs.

Sage Young, McDowell: Young went 3-for-3 with an inside-the-park home run in the Titans' win.

Layla Presnell, McDowell: Presnell pitched five innings, striking out six, walking four and giving up one hit to earn the win.

Layla Worley, Mountain Heritage: Worley drove in the tying run in the fifth inning and homered in the eighth to give the Cougars a lead, but they fell 4-3 to Swain County in the 1A playoffs.

Nevaeh Buchanon, Mountain Heritage: Buchanon struck out 11 batters in 8.1 innings pitched in the loss.

Paisley Johnson, Murphy: Johnson outdueled Gray Stone Day, striking out seven and allowing three hits in a 2-0 victory in the first round of the 1A playoffs.

Sadie Jo Hunter, North Buncombe: Hunter struck out 13 batters, allowed four hits and gave up one unearned run in the Black Hawks' 1-0 loss to Reynolds in the 3A playoffs.

Elly Wright, Owen: Wright's three RBIs help lead the Warlassies to a 5-1 win over Burns in the 2A playoffs.

Aubrey Treadway, Reynolds: Treadway struck out 10 batters and allowed two hits to outduel North Buncombe in a 1-0 win in the first round of the 3A playoffs.

Kayla Doughty, Reynolds: Doughty drove in the winning run in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly to secure the upset.

Sophie Roberts, Robbinsville: Roberts hit a home run and drove home three in Robbinsville's 15-0 win three-inning win to move onto the second round of the 1A playoffs.

Sydney Adams, Robbinsville: Adams drove in three runs on a single in the Black Knights' 12-run first inning.

Rylee Rawls, Swain County: Rawls struck out 11 batters in nine innings in the circle, allowing eight hits and three runs. She also went 3-for-5 and scored the walk off run in the bottom of the ninth to beat Mountain Heritage, 4-3, in the first round of the 1A playoffs.

Makena Henderson, West Henderson: The catcher went 2-for-3 with two RBIs as part of the Falcons' 10-run third inning. West Henderson beat Stuart W. Cramer 10-0 in five innings to move to the second round of the 3A playoffs.

Harper Sikorski, West Henderson: Sikorski went 2-for-2 and drove in two runs for the Falcons.

Girls soccer

Caroline Bridges, Asheville School: Bridges scored four goals as Asheville School beat Concord Academy, 8-0, in the first round of the NCISAA playoffs.

Abby Huter, Brevard: Huter saved 14 shots against Polk County, but the Wolverines won 2-1.

Emma Ledford, Murphy: Ledford made 15 saves in 100 minutes of regulation and overtime play to help the Bulldogs earn a 1-1 tie with Highlands.

Carolina Taylor, Polk County: Taylor scored the winner in the 84th minute of Polk County's 2-1 upset victory over Brevard.

Lidia Fiore, Roberson: Fiore made five saves to shut out Reynolds, 2-0, and help Roberson clinch a share of the Mountain Athletic Conference title.

Julia Wells, Tuscola: Wells saved eight shots to preserve her eighth shutout win of the season, helping Tuscola beat Smoky Mountain 1-0.

Lauren Clonch, West Henderson: Clonch's hat trick helped lead West Henderson to a 9-0 win over Frankin.

Allison Justus, West Henderson: Justus added on to the Falcons' win with two goals and two assists.

Monday

Girls soccer

Caitlin Shapiro, Avery County: Shapiro scored a brace to help lead the Vikings past Mitchell, 4-0.

Kai'ana Stella, Mountain Heritage: The freshman scored two goals, but the Cougars fell 3-2 to Draughn.
