Wizards receive 8th pick in 2023 NBA Draft lottery

CHICAGO -- The Wizards received their most likely result in Tuesday's NBA Draft lottery, as they landed the eighth overall pick in the 2023 draft set for June 22. Washington entered the lottery with the eighth-best odds, which included a 32.9% of picking eighth overall.

Though they didn't move up, this will be their highest first-round draft selection since 2013 when they picked third. They may also be aided by a deep draft class, especially in positions of long-term need.

With Monte Morris and Delon Wright one year away from free agency, they could potentially choose between two point guards in Anthony Black (Arkansas) and Cason Wallace (Kentucky). Both bring size, defense and playmaking skills to the position.

If the Wizards want to go for a wing, they could look at Cam Whitmore (Villanova), who is from the D.C. area. He can create off-the-dribble, finish above the rim and play physical defense. Gradey Dick (Kansas) could help the Wizards' outside shooting as one of the best 3-point marksmen in this class.

Other options could include power forwards Taylor Hendricks (UCF) or Jarace Walker (Houston). Both can impact the game with their scoring and their defense.

This is the fourth time in the last five years the Wizards have selected within the range of eight-through-10 in the NBA Draft. It is a familiar spot for them, but the makeup of this year's class could work in their favor, especially if they really want a point guard.

Wizards officials will continue to evaluate prospects at this week's NBA Draft combine in Chicago, now with a better idea of the players who will be available when they are set to pick in June. From here, they will attend agent-held workouts and host prospects in Washington for pre-draft workouts at their facility.

Washington also has two second round picks, making for three total selections in this year's draft.
