Wisconsin football fans react to Badgers' new low point after loss to Northwestern, some on Twitter want Barry Alvarez to save program
Wisconsin Badgers football fans really shouldn't be surprised at this point in the season.
Luke Fickell's team has shown everyone who it is game after game, week after week. It happened again Saturday against the Northwestern Wildcats.
But this might be the most painful to date if that was possible after last week's loss to Indiana on the road. And it's clear the Badgers have hit rock bottom on their 2023 season.
Wisconsin was shredded by Northwestern, 24-10, a showing that Fickell called "embarrassing." Compare that to the previous two years in this matchup when Wisconsin combined to outscore Northwestern 77-14 in two wins. Fans have to be wondering what has happened to the program in Fickell's first season.
The Wildcats were more physical, torched Mike Tressel's defense and, after Wisconsin's opening-drive field goal, the Badgers' mistake-prone offense was mostly non-existent.
The first half was a nightmare for UW's defense as Wisconsin went down 24-3. Northwestern, which averaged just 20.1 points per game, moved the ball with ease and passed that mark early in the second quarter. For context, Northwestern scored just seven points in a loss to Iowa last week and came to Madison on a 14-game road losing streak. But at one point on Saturday, Northwestern converted its first 10 third downs, including on its first and third touchdowns of the game.
The Wildcats entered the game ranked last in the Big Ten in rushing at 98.6 yards. They passed that total early in the second quarter after their first three drives of the game, all of which ended in touchdowns. For total yards, they were second-last in the Big Ten with 292.1 yards per game. They exceeded that total as well with 294 in the first half.
The second half didn't get any better for the Badgers, who didn't score their first touchdown of the game until there were 11 seconds left in the game with many at Camp Randall Stadium already gone. It was so bad that even with Northwestern barely moving the ball in the second half and not scoring, the Badgers still had no chance.
Social media, like it has for much of the season, didn't hold back in their disdain for what they saw from the Badgers, who fell to 5-5.

Jim Leonard isn't laughing, he's crying for this program.

Has there been a bigger disappointment than Wisconsin and Luke Fickell? The west is terrible and they still can’t get it done.

Sucks when you realize Northwestern is dancing on our graves because Wisconsin has now become everyone else's get right game.

I don't care if Luke Fickell & staff are coaching Chryst's roster. Back to back unacceptable losses to Indiana and Northwestern. This program has taken 0 steps forward in year 1 for Fickell.
I have nothing left to say about the 2023 Wisconsin Badgers. 👋— Trenten Scheidegger (@TrentScheids) November 11, 2023
I’m old enough to remember when Luke Fickell was a god and Wisconsin was going to have an “air raid” offense 🤣

Wisconsin has gone full 1-2-3 Cancun mode on Luke Fickell huh? Pretty remarkable getting destroyed at home by a Northwestern team with an interim head coach

Will the Badgers even get to a bowl game this season?
— Scary Alvarez (@barryisthedon) November 11, 2023
Is Barry Alvarez around?
There better be improvement next year, or we're going to have to bring back Barry Alvarez. #OnWisconsin https://t.co/IsqlxRuOYH

Former Wisconsin Badger Vince Biegel, however, still has faith in the program: 'Trust the process'
Badger fans you don’t have to say anything. I know….
But trust me when I say this:
Trust. The. Process.
There are bright days ahead for #Wisconsin fans. We knew going into the season there were going to be growing pains. Coach Fickell and his staff are recruiting the right…— Vince Biegel (@VinceBiegel) November 11, 2023
Twitter reacts to Badgers trailing 24-3 at halftime vs. Northwestern: Didn't Luke Fickell talk about championships at Wisconsin?
I mean - we’re down 21-3 at home to Northwestern. At this point I don’t blame em. Program has a lot of work ahead of them. https://t.co/ICnRrK0YqR

Really inspired by the strong start by Wisconsin on both sides of the ball, especially the defense. They apparently forgot Northwestern is trash, much like they forgot the same about Indiana. Actually the whole Big Ten West is trash…

Boo birds flying early at Camp Randall Stadium as Wisconsin punts the ball away. Badgers have seven rushing attempts for eight yards.

If Luke Fickell is the head coach of a team that snaps a 21-year bowl streak after spending the off-season talking about "playing for championships," he's going to have an uphill battle winning back the trust of #Badgers fans

Wisconsin Football is officially at rock bottom.

#Wisconsin was 5-3 and the #Badgers might not become bowl-eligible.
They're terrible. The offensive game plans are putrid every week. Luke Fickell came in with a bunch of fanfare and has been nothing less than a failure. This is embarrassing. #NWvsWIS #B1G— Ron Clements (@Ron_Clements) November 11, 2023
On the positive side, the Badgers did stop Northwestern from scoring four touchdowns in the first half.
Badgers down 24-3. Northwestern gets the ball to start the second half.

Getting blown out against northwestern at home is a new low

Halftime: Northwestern 24, Wisconsin 3
I've pinched myself plenty, it's real. The Wildcats outrushed Wisconsin 124-14 and Ben Bryant threw for 169 yards and touchdowns.
Oh, by the way, NU starts the second half with the ball— Matthew Shelton (@M_Shelton33) November 11, 2023
How are the Badgers going to beat USC and Oregon in the future if we can’t beat god damn Northwestern
