The Wisconsin Badgers volleyball team is ranked No. 1 in nation for fifth straight week

MADISON – For the fifth straight week the No. 1 women’s volleyball team in the nation resides in the UW Field House.

Wisconsin maintained the top spot in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll after scoring sweeps over Northwestern and Indiana during the first week of Big Ten Conference play. The victories raised the Badgers' record to 11-0, the second-best start in program history behind its 16 straight wins to begin the 2020 season that was played in the winter and spring of 2021 due to the COVID pandemic.

UW also sits atop the NCAA Division I women’s volleyball committee’s top 10, the ranking used to determined seeds and host sites for the NCAA Tournament.

As for the AVCA poll, Wisconsin maintained its No. 1 ranking, but its grip on the position wasn’t as strong as last week. Nebraska gained four first-place votes and trimmed 19 points off the deficit between the the two teams. The teams will play Oct. 21 at Nebraska and Nov. 24 at the Field House.

Four other Big Ten teams are in the AVCA top 25: No. 13 Minnesota dropped one spot, No. 15 Penn State holds the same position for the second straight week, No. 17 Purdue climbed two spots and No. 22 Ohio State dropped one .

No other team from the league received a vote.
