Winter season is underway: Top performers for the first week of high school sports

Consider it Week Zero of the winter season.

The high school sports season kicked off this week with a sprinkling of games. Just about everybody joins the mix next week as the winter kicks into high gear. Basketball games started on Thursday night and Saturday brings the first busy hockey day of the season.

Sunday

BOYS BASKETBALL

Manny Aguayo (18 points, 11 rebounds), Jerry Dessalines (13 points, 11 rebounds) and Mohamad Tarjali (16 points, 4 offensive rebounds) starred as Quincy gutted out a 68-64 overtime win over Barnstable. The Presidents forced 22 turnovers and hauled in 19 offensive rebounds.

BOYS HOCKEY

The trio of Quinn Simmons, Nolan Petrucelli and Matt Cerruti scored as Norwell defeated Nantucket, 3-2. Simmons recorded his 100th career point in the win.

Saturday

GIRLS HOCKEY

McKenzie Lima-Tower and Caroline Batchelder scored as Archbishop Williams defeated St. Mary's, 2-1. Catherine Lacey and Corinne Cooper picked up assists in the win.

Sabrina Stone's first career goal was the OT winner as Milton defeated Marshfield, 3-2. Milton's Molly Murphy and Ellie McConville add a goal apiece, while goaltender Lila Chamoun (27 saves) and Megan Carew also played well.

Head coach Jay Ronan secured his first career win as Quincy/North Quincy coasted to a 6-0 win over Stoughton. Grace Gabeceiras played well for the Black Knights in the loss.

BOYS HOCKEY

Willy Cahill's hat trick and overtime winner powered Scituate to a thrilling 7-6 win over Wachusett in the season opener.

Five different Tigers (Landon Grothe, Matt Lawson, Andy Poulos, Andrew Livingstone and Shaun Feehan) found the back of the net as Oliver Ames knotted a 5-5 tie against Plymouth South.

Will Foley (3 goals) and Bobby Quill (2 goals) starred as Bridgewater-Raynham defeated Newton South, 8-4. Nate Adduci, Sean Nasiff and Dante Tudor also scored for the Trojans. Alex Egras recorded his first win in net.

Friday

BOYS BASKETBALL

Tyler Anderson scored 16 points as Blue Hills defeated South Shore Tech, 57-35. Dom Capaccioli added 12 points. Logan Perrault (11 points) and Todd Egan (10) played well in the loss.

Four players scored in double figures as Southeastern defeated Cape Cod Academy, 58-30.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

North Quincy defeated Dighton-Rehoboth, 56-10, to roll to a season-opening win. Ava Bryan scored a game-high 20 points off four 3-pointers. Maeve Powers added 9 points and Nora Geary had 6.

Senior Shania Gardner scored 20 points as East Bridgewater opened the season with a 66-47 win over Stoughton. Jenna Oman (13 points) and Liv McManus (10) also played well.

Blue Hills' Bridget Devine (18 points, 7 rebounds), Bella Sulfaro (11 points, three 3-pointers) and Ally Johnson (8 points) led the way in a 48-24 win over South Shore Tech, which got strong games from Allie Blanchard (13 points) and Mia Bradshaw (12 rebounds).

Thursday

BOYS BASKETBALL

Allen Brown scored 28 points while Armani Perkins added 19 in Holbrook's 75-53 win over Excel Academy.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Milton's Christina McA’Nulty finished with 11 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals in a 38-32 loss to Dedham. Grace Pater added 7 points and strong defense.

Tuesday

GIRLS BASKETBALL

In the Woodward School's 35-22 win over Commonwealth, sophomore captain Nicole Leung starred with 23 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists.
