Winner announced: Rockford Register Star Athlete of the Week for Aug. 21-26
Lutheran's running back Gavin Sanders was the winner of this week's Rockford Register Star Athlete of the Week poll, and like he did on the football field last week, he pulled away from everyone.
Sanders, who led all backs in the area last week with 305 yards rushing with 5 TDs, all on just seven carries, earned almost 38 percent (1,431) of the vote this week. Dylan Malmgren, a Harlem cross country standout, took second with just under 18 percent (668 votes).

Sanders was huge for Lutheran, which pulled away from Winnebago for a 56-23 season-opening win.
The rest of the nominees were: Malmgren; Belvidere North's Joseph Brown; Lutheran's Hunter Evans; Belvidere's Nina Fiore; Boylan's Donavan Hanserd; Freeport's Dedric Macon; Hononegah's Cole Warren; and Oregon's Logan Weems.
Voting for the next athlete of the week begins Tuesday. The full list of nominees runs online at rrstar.com on Tuesdays and in print Wednesdays. Winners are announced online Fridays and in print on Sundays.
