Wimbledon 2023 LIVE: Katie Boulter thrashed by Elena Rybakina to end British hopes

British hopes at Wimbledon are over after Katie Boulter was crushed by defending champion Elena Rybakina late in the night on Centre Court.

Boulter was the last British player standing in the singles after Andy Murray, Cameron Norrie and Liam Broady were knocked out on Friday but Rybakina produced a dominant performance to win 6-1 6-1 in just 56 minutes.

Murray questioned whether he has the motivation to return to Wimbledon next year after a heartbreaking five-set defeat to Stefanos Tsitisipas ended his hopes at the Championships.

Carlos Alcaraz passed a tough test of his Wimbledon ambitions after battling to a four-set victory over Nicolas Jarry to reach the fourth round.

The world No 1 was pushed to the limit by Jarry’s big serve and powerful forehand but prevailed 6-3 6-7 6-3 7-6 in almost four hours of play, which pushed Boulter’s match against Rybakina late into the evening.

Alcaraz pushes hard for the break after putting a lovely backhand pass past Jarry at the net - but Jarry holds his nerve to thump down a couple of big serves. Great set, this. Jarry is proving to be a great challenge for the World No 1.

Carlos Alcaraz 6-3 1-3 Nicolas Jarry

This level is very impressive from Jarry, as has his attitude since losing the opener. The Chilean plays a perfect backhand into the corner and moves in to meet a crisp volley that even Alcaraz can’t reach. The Spaniard shrugs as if to say, ‘too good’, before showing an impressive response to save break point and hold.

Set! Carlos Alcaraz 6-3 0-2 Nicolas Jarry

Set! Daniil Medvedev 4-6 6-3 2-0 Marton Fucsovics

Break! Well, well. Jarry gets the reward his overall play sort of deserved in the first set. It only takes a couple of loose points from the Spaniard and the 25th seed moves into the lead.

Medvedev also breaks at the start of the set. Fucsovics is going through a tough spell and shanks the forehand well wide.

Set! Daniil Medvedev 4-6 6-3 Marton Fucsovics

Alcaraz serves it out but Jarry made it awkward as he attacked with a huge inside out forehand, before putting away the volley. Alcaraz controls the next rally superbly, dragging Jarry all over the court and then putting away the winner into the space. Too good from Alcaraz. Jarry played that set pretty well but the Spaniard also had that extra gear.

That’s also a tidy comeback from Medvedevto level against Fucsovics, whose serve really dropped off from its first-set level. Interestingly Medvedev became much more aggressive in coming into the net and it was pretty effective.

Break! *Carlos Alcaraz 5-3 Nicolas Jarry

Magic from Alcaraz! He jumps on a double fault from Jarry by winning a brilliant rally, holding his nerve to pass his opponent with the forehand winner down the line! The first set will be his if he can hold now.

Great response from Medvedev! He forces three break points against Fucsovics, who doubles faults on 0-40. The Hungarian then had a break point in the next game but slices into the net. Medvedev managing to do a bit more in the baseline rallies now.

*Carlos Alcaraz 3-3 Nicolas Jarry

Another impressive hold from Jarry. He’s certainly asking the more questions in the first set, and Alcaraz has been taken to deuce twice now in the early stages.

The Spaniard is needing to go into his box of tricks, as he does with a lovely backhand lob as Jarry closed the net.

Jarry is an imposing figure on the baseline and towers about half a foot above Alcaraz. The Chilean holds serve to love and it will be fascinating to see how the explosive Spaniard can try to pick him apart on the returns.

Set! Daniil Medvedev 4-6 Marton Fucsovics

Fucsovics takes the opening set against the third seed! That looked pretty solid from the Hungarian, who serves the set out to love. He used the net approach well there, and the variety gives him the edge against the former US Open champion.

Meanwhile the rain is pitter- pattering on the Centre Court roof. Doesn’t look like we’re going to have play outside for a while.

Carlos Alcaraz 1-0 Nicolas Jarry*

Unlucky Jarry! The Chilean presses Alcaraz on 15-30, hitting cleanly from the baseline before moving into the net. Alcaraz’s passing shot clips the net cord and lobs him!

This is a good return game from Jarry and he takes Alcaraz into deuce, where the Spaniard holds with good direction down the line on the forehand.

RAIN! It has arrived. After a very humid morning, the skies open and the covers are quickly drawn over the ground courts. There will now be no play until at least 13:30 BST.

Beatriz Haddad Maia was able to wrap up her 6-2 6-2 win against Sorana Cîrstea before the rain arrived, but Petra Kvitova was not so lucky.

The two-time champion had the chance to serve out the second set but Natalija Stevanovic breaks back and it was level on serve before the match was suspended.

Brollies and jackets are now out across the grounds.

Wimbledon 2023

Arguably the match of the day here at Wimbledon is the third-round battle between former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini and Alexander Zverev. Berrettini is looking strong again after brushing aside Alex de Minaur yesterday.

The Italian was unable to enter Wimbledon last year after testing positive for Covid on the eve of the tournament, and after a tricky year of injuries it’s why reaching the third round “feels like way more”.

“Last year, what happened last year is something that I think it didn’t heal yet. It’s a really sharp pain, if I think about it,” Berrettini said.

“I probably was in the best shape in my career, especially feeling great on grass. I wanted to enjoy the tournament. Such a special tournament for me. Not being able to play was something that, even when I was better physically, was really tough mentally to overcome.

“That’s why I’m here this year, because I missed last year. I was really sad. Even playing like few points would have been good this year. Yeah, that’s why I’m really happy. I’m really glad. I know it’s third round, but it feels like way more.”

Wimbledon 2023: What time is Katie Boulter playing today?

11:44 , Jamie Braidwood

Britain’s Katie Boulter takes on defending Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina in the match of the day on Centre Court on Saturday.

Boulter is carrying Britian’s hopes in the singles after Andy Murray, Cameron Norrie and Liam Broady were all knocked out in the men’s draw on Tuesday.

Rybakina won her first grand slam title when the 24-year-old beat Ons Jabeur in last year’s WImbledon final and is now ranked third in the world as she looks to defend her crown.

I think it’s a super great opportunity for me,” Boutler said. “I’ve got nothing to lose. She’s clearly the defending champion for a reason.

“I’m going to have a swing and go for it. I’ve got a lot of tennis behind me. It’s time for me to test my skills against an incredible champion.”

Wimbledon order of play and Saturday’s schedule

11:35 , Karl Matchett

Katie Boulter is the last Brit standing in the singles at Wimbledon and her mouth-watering clash with reigning champion Elena Rybakina highlights a stacked Saturday at the All England Club.

Friday was a dark day for Brits in the men’s singles draw as Andy Murray, Cameron Norrie and Liam Broady all fell by the wayside to leave Boulter as the final home hope – although a clash against powerful Rybakina is a significant obstacle as she looks to reach the fourth round of a grand slam for the first time.

Elsewhere at SW19, men’s No 1 seed Carlos Alcaraz will look to follow up his straight-sets victory over Alexandre Muller on Friday with another over Chile’s Nicolas Jarry 24 hours later as the first match on Centre Court, with an intriguing clash between Ons Jabeur and Bianca Andreescu following before Boulter vs Rybakina as the headline act.

Wimbledon 2023: Iga Swiatek continues impressive Wimbledon progress

11:28 , Jamie Braidwood

World No 1 Iga Swiatek on reaching the third round of Wimbledon: “I do feel more relaxed. I think also because I won Roland Garros and I feel like after that the pressure is a little bit off because I reached my goal kind of for the season. I don't have to think about anything else other than playing.

“But on the other hand you may say the same about last year. But this time is a little bit different because I feel like I have more kind of, I don't know, free space in my head to develop my game and to work on my skills on grass.”

Wimbledon 2023: Stefanos Tsitsipas on passing Andy Murray test

11:14 , Jamie Braidwood

Stefanos Tsitsipas on beating Andy Murray, the “marathon man” at Wimbledon: “It doesn’t come easy, especially when you’re playing Andy Murray. He’s a marathon man. He likes making it long. He likes being out there for hours and hours. That’s also a part of his strength as a tennis player. He has the capacity and the ability to stay for a long duration on the court, making it physical. That was the case today.

“Those two sets felt really long. I remember at some point on the fifth, I was thinking it feels like we were playing forever. That’s the sensation that I got.

“With Andy, I knew that I was dealing with something way more serious, especially when you’re playing with someone that has won here twice, you have a different sort of expectation. They come in with much more knowledge and understanding of how the court reacts to your ball. That was something that I had in the back of my head that he might know the court a little bit better than I do.

“I went full in. I was down in the score and kept fighting. I really liked my spirit on the court. I really liked how I showed to myself and my team that I am fully and truly involved in every single point. I’m not looking to stop doing that. I’m happy doing it this way.”

Wimbledon 2023: Petra Kvitova among early starters on Day 6

10:58 , Jamie Braidwood

Petra Kvitova is among the early starters on Saturday as the two-time champion faces Serbia’s Natalija Stevanovic on Court Two.

Kvitova is finding form again on her return to Wimbledon but admitted that brings added pressure.

The Czech said: “Everybody knows that I like to play on the grass. It’s my favorite surface. I love it. Doesn’t matter actually where it is.

“Other Grand Slams I am more relaxed than I am here probably. Every time I’m here, I’m trying to be relaxed as well. Not easy (smiling). I’m trying every time.

“I’m still getting older and older. Still with the experience I’m still trying to find it out what I can do new, what I can’t. So far it’s okay, so we’ll see.”

Wimbledon star corrects reporter in awkward press conference: ‘I didn’t win’

Paula Badosa had to awkwardly inform a reporter she had lost her second-round match after a back injury ended her Wimbledon campaign.

The Spaniard was forced to retire when trailing 6-2 1-0 to Marta Kostyuk after her troublesome stress fracture flared up and she revealed she will not be able to play the mixed doubles with her boyfriend Stefanos Tsitsipas.

To add insult to injury, news of her fitness struggles on Court 18 had clearly not reached an international reporter, who opened her post-match press conference by congratulating her on her victory, prompting a toe-curling exchange.

Wimbledon 2023: Cameron Norrie reacts to disappointing Eubanks defeat

10:27 , Jamie Braidwood

Cameron Norrie after his straight-sets defeat to Christopher Eubanks: “I think credit to Chris on that one. He played unbelievable. Served well. Came out, was hitting the ball huge. Didn’t miss at all.

“I got outplayed. I couldn’t really get into the match how I wanted. Wasn’t feeling the ball, like, that well today. I fought as hard as I could. Yeah, came up against someone who was really confident. He played great. So he definitely deserved to win the match. I told him that. Everything went his way today, and he deserved it.

“I’m disappointed, like I said. I wanted to play well at the slams. It’s not quite working out for me right now. I’m preparing as well as I can, leaving no stone unturned with my team, my preparation and everything.

“More than anything I’m disappointed. Yeah, I want to play well in slams. I think there’s no reason why not. I’m tougher to beat over five sets. But, yeah, I just need to keep improving.”

Wimbledon 2023: The curious case of Cameron Norrie, the forgotten British No 1

10:14 , Jamie Braidwood

The contrast was stark but it seemed oddly fitting. At the same time Andy Murray was recapturing the hearts of the nation with a gutsy, passion-infused five-set defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas on Centre Court, Britain’s actual men’s tennis No 1 was enduring a comparatively low-key loss of his own in front of a two-thirds full, slightly muted Court 1.

Forget moving the needle, Cameron Norrie vs Christopher Eubanks didn’t even have a needle, while Murray vs Tsitsipas was breaking the dial.

Those fans that did stick around to watch the entirety of Norrie’s latest Wimbledon contest – rather than joining the exodus at 3-0 in the second set to secure a place on The Hill ahead of Murray coming on to Centre – were treated to a compelling contest.

Wimbledon 2023: Liam Broady responds to British exits

09:58 , Jamie Braidwood

Liam Broady described the 90 minutes where he, Andy Murray and Cameron Norrie all exited Wimbledon as a “Debbie Downer”.

Broady’s impressive journey ended in the third round after he was unable to produce a repeat of his shock victory of Casper Ruud when beaten 4-6 6-2 7-5 7-5 by Denis Shapovalov.

The defeat ended British interest in the men’s singles as Broady followed Murray and Norrie out on a chastening afternoon for the male home players.

He did get further than his two compatriots, who both went out in the second round, as he matched his best performance at a grand slam, but says that did not count for much.

Asked if he could take any pride out of that, he said: “Not particularly, no. It kind of makes it worse that we’ve all lost on the same day, as well.

“Obviously I’d have preferred for us all to have won. Probably would have felt a bit better if we’d staggered what days we lost on, whereas now it’s a bit of a Debbie Downer, isn’t it?

“For all three of those results to happen on the same day is pretty rough.”

Wimbledon 2023: Novak Djokovic races to beat Wimbledon curfew

09:44 , Jamie Braidwood

Novak Djokovic beat Stan Wawrinka and the Wimbledon curfew to book his place in the fourth round.

The match did not begin until 8.40pm, an hour later than Andy Murray and Stefanos Tsitsipas got under way on Thursday, but Djokovic finished a 6-3 6-1 7-6 (5) victory with 14 minutes to spare.

It certainly did Wawrinka no favours that Djokovic was against the clock as he clicked straight into top gear and pushed the pace at every opportunity.

It was a 31st consecutive victory for Djokovic at the All England Club, equalling Pete Sampras’ best, and the seven-time champion said: “He was two points away from extending this match to another day. Coming to the court we knew it was going to be really tight.

“I know I can always play better, I always have a couple of gears that I can go higher. Hopefully as the tournament progresses I can play better and better.”

Andy Murray on Wimbledon future

09:33 , Jamie Braidwood

Asked how confident he was about being back at Wimbledon next year, Murray said: “I don't know. Yeah, motivation is obviously a big thing. Continuing having early losses in tournaments like this don't necessarily help with that.

“Yeah, it's similar to I guess last year. I had a long think about things, spoke to my family, decided to keep on going. I don't plan to stop right now. But, yeah, this one will take a little while to get over. Hopefully find the motivation again to keep training, keep pushing, try and keep getting better.”

Andy Murray reveals future Wimbledon plans after Stefanos Tsitsipas defeat

09:17 , Jamie Braidwood

A devastated Andy Murray was left questioning his motivation to keep going after Stefanos Tsitsipas fought back to win their delayed second-round clash on Centre Court.

The Scot was two sets to one up overnight after the 11pm curfew came into play but he was unable to complete the job, with fifth seed Tsitsipas battling to a 7-6 (3) 6-7 (2) 4-6 7-6 (3) 6-4 victory.

It was a hugely disappointing way for Murray to mark the 10th anniversary of his career-defining first Wimbledon title, and he is all too aware that his chances for another deep run here are ebbing away.

Andy Murray slumped into the press conference room at Wimbledon, dumping his bags by his feet and lowering his stiff and weary body into a chair. Before shuffling across the stage, Murray believed he had been edged out by Stefanos Tsitsipas in a battle that could have gone either way. After resuming their contest on Friday afternoon, Tsitsipas didn’t allow Murray any break-point chances, raising his level in the fourth-set tiebreak and then again at the start of the fifth. Murray competed until the end, but the fifth seed ultimately showed his class as he denied the Briton a famous comeback.
