Conference play started in the Wilmington area last week, and some big-time rivalries produced notable performances.

Here are the top performances from Wilmington-area high school athletes between Sept. 11-16.

Boys soccer

BOYS SOCCER Late goal from Hoggard's Clark Beery propels Vikings to top of the Mideastern Conference

John Franck, Sr., New Hanover: Franck totaled five goals and two assists as New Hanover earned two victories.

Maddox Kelly, Jr., Topsail: The Pirates forward scored four goals and added two assists in three games.

Mason Istael, Jr., Laney: The junior scored twice and added three assists as the Buccaneers defeated West Brunswick 9-0 Tuesday.

Aidan Murray, Jr., Pender: Murray recorded five goals and three assists as Pender picked up three wins.

Volleyball

Isabel Sandsturm, Sr., Laney: The Laney senior recorded 44 kills, 12 aces, and 79 digs as the Bucs went 2-1.

Ryan Lambert, Jr., Topsail: Lambert notched 41 kills as Topsail went 2-1.

Maggie Clucas, Sr., Cape Fear Academy: Clucas brought in 21 kills as the Hurricanes won two games.

Girls golf

Ellie Hildreth, Jr., Hoggard: Hildreth earned medalist honors as she shot 72 during a Mideastern Conference match on Tuesday.

Jillian Fatkin, Sr., South Brunswick: Fatkin came in right behind Hildreth as she shot 73 Tuesday.

Girls tennis

Sophia Catino, Jr., New Hanover: Catino moved to 8-0 with two perfect performances at No. 1 singles as the Wildcats cruised past Laney and Hoggard.

Hannah Davis, Jr., New Hanover: Davis was also perfect at No. 2 singles.

Carys Subach, Soph., South Brunswick: The Cougars sophomore picked up two wins at No. 1 singles.

Cross Country

Owen Reece, Soph., Topsail: The Pirates runner finished first during Thursday's Mideastern Conference 5K meet.

Elise Hunneyman, Fr., Hoggard: The Vikings freshman finished first in the girls 5K during Thursday's meet.

Ashlei Summers, Sr., Hoggard: Summers finished an area-best fifth in the 2023 Addiads XC Challenge 5K, a contest that included over 260 runners.
