Where do high school basketball teams stand two weeks into the season?

Now that the high school basketball season is fully underway in Greater Cincinnati, it's time to take a look at where the local teams stand.

As the Christmas and New Year holidays approach, many teams will test themselves against heightened competition in various tournaments and multi-team events.

The Enquirer will provide a weekly roundup of the action throughout the regular season. Here are some of the biggest headlines after the first few weeks of the season.

A brotherly love of scoring: Mariemont brothers Socko, Sam Stalzer lead team to win with dual 20-point performances

Cooper, Covington Catholic big winners at John Turner Classic

In the penultimate game of Saturday's slate at Newport High School, Cooper grabbed a win over St. Xavier by a score of 74-56.

The Jaguars, led by Yamil Rondon's 20 points, went on a 13-2 run to end the first half and outscored the Bombers 42-29 in the second half. Isaiah Johnson and Jaiden Combs, coming off an extended football season, contributed 16 points each.

Once Cooper gets all of its football players recovered and Shaun Pouncy returns from a torn ACL he suffered at the end of last season, the Jaguars will be a threat to win the Ninth Region.

Speaking of contenders, Covington Catholic beat Newport in the nightcap and marquee matchup of the day, 73-63.

Much like Cooper, the Colonels used a dominant stretch to pull away, outscoring the Wildcats 23-15 in the third quarter.

Center Caden Miller was a game-wrecker against dunk-happy Newport, blocking five shots. Sophomore Athens McGillis and senior Brady Hussey combined for 29 points and 14 assists.

The Wildcats were led by Taylen Kinney's 18 points and James Turner's 15 points. Despite committing only four turnovers, Newport couldn't stop Cov Cath from making 70 percent of its field goals.

The Wildcats were the preseason favorite to win the Ninth Region; the Colonels are worthy of being in the conversation.

Simon Kenton wins Billy Hicks Classic

The Lady Pioneers beat West Jessamine, Scott County and Grant County in the first of three in-season tournaments this season.

The win over Grant County wasn't the only time the two will meet this season. Both the Braves and the Lady Pioneers are expected to contend for the 32nd District and Eighth Region titles.

Sophomore Haylie Webb put up double-doubles in both the semifinal and championship games. Freshman Brynli Pernell averaged 13.7 points during the tournament.

Checking in on some undefeated teams

Before games tip off on Dec. 11, there are a total of 31 teams in Cincinnati that are undefeated: 21 boys teams and 10 girls teams. The number of boys teams is higher because they began their season more than a week after the girls teams took the court for the first team. Here are a few undefeated teams that are firing on all cylinders.

Norwood girls: Through four games, Ali Winchester and Kylie Jones are the Indians' two leading scorers, a phrase that has rung true in each of the last two seasons. Norwood is getting it done with defense, allowing just 27.5 points per game while racking up 9.8 steals per game. The Indians face Cincinnati Country Day on Wednesday, Dec. 13. Only one team will remain unscathed as the Nighthawks are also 4-0.

CHCA boys: The Eagles have won their first four games for the third time in four seasons. They are averaging 68 points per game thanks to 40 percent shooting from behind the three-point line. Luke Sanders, Jackson Woods and Griffin Ridner-Richard are all averaging double-digit points. CHCA's next game is Saturday at St. Xavier, which is 2-1.

Ross girls: Moving from the Southwest Ohio Conference to the Southwestern Buckeye League hasn't been a problem for the Rams, who are 4-0 and have won every game by double-digits. Lanie Lipps is leading the team in scoring once again, but sophomore guard Carmen Bosse is contributing 11.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. Three-sport star Myah Boze is also in the mix, shooting 50 percent from three-point range while pilfering four passes per game.

Clinton Massie boys: The Falcons are off to their best start since they opened the 2018-2019 season at 5-1. Steve Graves' squad is 3-0 with wins over Waynesville, Felicity-Franklin and Western Brown. Cale Wilson leads the team in rebounding so far and has grabbed more offensive boards (11) than defensive (10). Clinton-Massie travels to Monroe (1-1) on Tuesday, Dec. 12.

Middletown boys: The Middies are one of three unbeaten teams in the Greater Miami Conference. They own wins over Edgewood, Northridge and Oak Hills. Jeremiah Landers is coming off his first football season and is second on the team in both points (12) and rebounds (5.5) per game. If the Middies can go 3-0 this week, they could be a major player in the GMC race. They face Mason on Tuesday, Lakota West on Friday and Little Miami on Saturday.

Western Brown girls: Three of the Broncos' four wins have come in dominant fashion. The only close game was a four-point win over Goshen in a matchup of the two DI schools in the Southern Buckeye Conference. Olivia Fischer and Madilyn Ruby have each been the leading scorer in two games apiece, but four players are averaging nine points or more. Western Brown is grabbing 18.5 steals per game, part of a stifling defense that has held three opponents to 41 points or less.
