Westover's Stackhouse captures 400th career win in Overhills rout

One of Cumberland County basketball's longest-tenured coaches reached a milestone Thursday night in a conference matchup.

Westover's George Stackhouse captured his 400th career win as a head coach on Thursday in a 62-46 rout against Overhills led by an Ari Fulton 34-point explosion.

Stackhouse is in his 22nd season as Wolverines head coach and has been successful in his tenure, including a 21-1, 13-0 AAC year heading into the last regular-season matchup versus E.E. Smith on senior night.

In his 33-year coaching experience, Stackhouse has made a few stops along the journey. He began at Kinston High School where he was head coach, until moving to the college level to work as an assistant coach at ECU under Bill Herroin for four years until then going back to high school basketball, at Westover.

"When you start off, you never really imagine any of these milestones. You mostly think about how you can pour into the kids as much as you can. I just try to get them to get the best they can be," Stackhouse said.

"I think they’re anticipating over 200 Division I coaches in the area this weekend. It’ll be an exciting time to go out and compete against some better teams and players,” Westover coach George Stackhouse said of this weekend's recruiting showcase in Charlotte. [Raul F. For Stackhouse, the kids are the point of focus to reaching success, not just in the win column, but for life beyond basketball. "I try to continue to grow as a coach because kids change. We want to always be able to motivate kids and be able to reach them so they can reach their goals and be the right kind of people," Stackhouse said. "We strive to teach them to be good citizens because that's most important.”

For Westover boys basketball, success goes a long way in the rankings, where they rank No. 27 in NC according to MaxPreps, and outside of the gym where they are philanthropic in the community with their time.

Looking to close out the regular season with a win over E.E. Smith, the Wolverines are focused on securing the conference title and an NCHSAA state championship.
