West Warwick cruises in baseball; Cumberland and La Salle win in softball

BASEBALL

Division III

West Warwick 15, Blackstone Valley 0

Dominic Carollo and Nick Bown combined to throw a shutout, allowing only one hit while striking out 13, in a game shortened by the mercy rule as the Wizards went on to win their 12th straight game. Most of the offense was supplied by Ian Peacock, who was 3-for-3 with two triples and 3 RBI, Logan Dean was 3-for-3 with 2 doubles a triple and 3 RBI and Dylan Lombari was 3-for-3 with 1 RBI. Jack Chiappetta had the lone hit for the Pride.

SOFTBALL

Division I

Cumberland 4, Cranston West 1

Jill Ryone tossed a three-hitter, Lacie Grenier drilled a home run, Leah Kilby connected for three singles and Reilly Austin added a pair of hits as the Clippers handed the Falcons only their second loss of the season. Cumberland evens its record at 6-6 while Cranston West falls to 11-2.

La Salle 6, East Providence 1

Freshman Hailey Vigneau, who no-hit Pilgrim in her last start, struck out 15 in a complete-game effort on Friday as the Rams defeated the Townies. Vigneau's career strikeout passed 100 for the season. Providing all the offense Vigneau would need was Phoenix Silva and Lily Roumelis, who both homered in the fifth inning to break open the game. Diana Hall chipped in by going 3-for-4, including a double. She also stole two bases. Silva, Ari DeMarco and Giuliana Ialongo each finished with a pair of hits for the Rams, now 9-3.

BOYS LACROSSE

Division III

Westerly 14, Burrillville 2

Liam Cody had a hand in 10 of the 14 goals his team scored (4 goals, 6 assists) and Division III-leading Westerly rolled to victory over Burrillville and remain undefeated at 10-0. The Bulldogs also had contributions from Lance Williams (3 goals 1 assist), Caleb Williams (2 goals, 2 assists) and Matt Horton and Alex Luzzi (2 goals each). Pat Poisson and Steve Rodrigues had a goal each in the Broncos' loss.

Division IV

Rogers 22, Cranston East 3

Dylan Walker and Connor Hole-Young each connected for five goals and  Jack Mathews nearly matched them with four as the Vikings rolled to their 12th victory without a loss. Dave Rivera chipped in with three goals and three assists and Nick Bodycoat and Chase Arment each had a pair of tallies for the victors, who led, 19-2, at the half.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Division I

Barrington 10, Prout 6

Alex Hope and Violet Gagliano each scored hat tricks as Barrington improved its record to 10-2 with a victory over Prout. Also helping the Eagles' cause were Emily Horn and Stella Hillier, who had a goal and an assist apiece. Sylvia Mayo scored two goals and Charlotte Danyla and Anna Lombardi each had one goal for the Eagles in the loss.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Division II

Westerly 3, Toll Gate 0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-23)

East Providence 3, Central 0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-18)

The Townies capitalized on the play of DJ Lepine (13 kills, 10 digs) and Xavier Graca (7 kills, 12 digs) to defeat the Knights and move ahead of them into fourth place in D-II with a record of 9-6. Central slips to 8-7.

Crossover

Barrington 3, Cranston East 2 (25-11, 23-25, 24-26, 25-18, 15-5)

Cranston East, which plays out of Division II, nearly pulled the upset on Division I Barrington but the Eagles finally prevailed in a five-set battle. Cam Kelly led the Barrington attack with 10 kills, 5 aces and 17 digs but two other players had major roles in the victory. Jimmy Ciummo added 9 kills and 5 blocks and SangMin Park had 43 assists and 10 digs as the Eagles won their 12th match against just one loss. Charlie Pincince made 12 kills and Cayto Kompradith had 41 digs for Cranston East, now 8-4.
