West Salem volleyball player wins Statesman Journal athlete of the week

West Salem volleyball player Lauryn Johnson is the Statesman Journal Athlete of the Week, winning a poll voted on by readers.

Against McNary, she had six aces, 20 kills and 10 digs. Against South Salem, she had 17 kills. In a tournament at Westview, she had 35 kills.

He rushed for 307 yards and four touchdowns in the Scots’ 53-25 win against Crescent Valley.

Riley Burns, Stayton boys soccer

He scored the Eagles’ goal in a 1-1 tie against North Marion, and he had two goals and two assists in their 8-0 win against Cascade.

Yulissa Chavez Cortes, Kennedy girls cross country

She has a season-best time of 21:57.7, which she ran Sept. 13 at the Silver Falls Oktoberfest Invitational. That time is the eighth-best in Class 3A/2A/1A District 2.
