West Holmes' Kyle Maltarich flies to D2 high jump regional title

A trio of West Holmes athletes earned spots at next week’s OHSAA State Championships after final-day action at the New Concord Division II Regional.

Kyle Maltarich (high jump), Casey Ogi (pole vault) and Katherine Kaster (1,600-meter run) all advanced after earning automatic bids at Muskingum University.

Maltarich, an All-Ohioan last season, cleared 6-feet-5 on his second attempt of the day en route to winning the region on least number of misses over Philo’s Aidan Mahon.

Despite a pair of misses to open the round, Ogi earned her first state appearance thanks to a mark of 10-4. It was enough to earn the junior the fourth and final spot to next week’s state meet in Dayton.

On the track, Kaster also locked-up the final spot in a big way with a fourth-place finish in the mile. The sophomore picked up a pair of spots at the 1,200-meter mark and then passed Minerva’s Kayla Crissman in the closing moments in crossing the finish line in 5:12.54.

The Knights also had a podium finish by senior Jacob Miller in the 3,200. Miller clocked a 10:01.74 to take eighth overall.
