West Ham vs Tottenham LIVE: Premier League result and final score after frantic end to London derby

Tottenham missed the chance to move into the top four when they were held to a 1-1 draw at West Ham after Brennan Johnson’s early strike was cancelled out by Kurt Zouma’s header in their Premier League clash.

Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs looked up for the battle from the start and went in front after five minutes through Johnson, who scored from close range when he connected with a low cross from Timo Werner following a slick counter-attack down the left.

West Ham were soon level with the ball going in off Kurt Zouma’s back a from a Jarrod Bowen corner in the 19th as the central defender rose amongst a crowd of players inside the six-yard box with the Spurs defence failing to snuff out the danger.

The hosts had a great chance to take the lead on the hour when Michail Antonio raced through having shrugged off Micky van de Ven but he shot tamely at goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

Tottenham lost more ground in the battle for a top-four finish after they were held to a 1-1 draw at West Ham.

Ange Postecoglou’s side could have leapfrogged fourth-placed Aston Villa with a win and made the perfect start when Brennan Johnson tapped home early on for his fifth goal of the season.

West Ham, who let a 3-1 lead slip to lose 4-3 at Newcastle last weekend, were able to respond in the 19th minute when Kurt Zouma scored from Jarrod Bowen’s corner and they could have claimed all three points.

While Spurs dominated possession throughout in east London, David Moyes watched Michail Antonio race through on the hour mark but fire straight at Guglielmo Vicario as the capital rivals could not be separated.

“I would have taken a point before the game, they’re a very good side Tottenham. I though we did a pretty good job on them [tactically]. We were a threat on a lot of things.

“I didn’t think we deserved to go behind but the players did a good job, we were a threat, they were a threat that’s why they’re going for the Champions League. Overall it will give us big confidence. We’ve been doing OK but for the setback at the weekend.”

“Yeah it was [tough physically] and it’s what you expect when you come here. They are a strong team and they sit compact so you have to be patient. I thought for the most part we controlled the game pretty well; we obviously got a great start with the early goal but they were always going to a threat from set-pieces so disappointed to concede one.

“Probably just our decision making in the final third [let us down]. We got into some good areas and that final decision we made didn’t help us but it was a tough game. We’re obviously disappointed not to win but it’s a tough place to come.”

On Johnson’s substitution: “Yeah I think he’s alright. It was just a knock from a set-piece. I think everyone got through it pretty well considering it was two games in a short space of time.”

“We’re disappointed [with a point]. For large parts of the game we dominated and got into some good areas and lacked that cutting edge especially in the second half. The performance we are reasonably happy with it’s just that last bit we need to keep working on.

On his development: “Every week it’s more and more learning. Coming to this club, there was so much to learn and development needed. Every week I’m feeling more confident and getting into better areas so if I can keep scoring and assisting I’m happy with that.

“In my first couple of months, I wan’t getting into the back post and in my meetings he [Postecoglou] was always drawing arrows in positions I should be coming into. As time went on, I made it a conscious effort to get into those areas because it will drop for me and today and it did.”

On next season’s hopes: “We’re striving to contend. The style of play is unbelievable. There’s definitely some areas which we need to cut out. Conceding from a set-piece like that today is unacceptable. They start getting up for it and the crowd does. But it’s an exciting team and we just need more time to gel but we still want to finish as high as we can this season.”

Heading into this encounter, the Scotsman is hoping to steady the ship and re-energise their bid for European football: “Tottenham have done well this season, so it’s going to be a difficult game.

Ange Postecoglou has brushed off concerns over Tottenham’s lack of first-half goals.

Spurs have now fired a blank in six consecutive first halves but produced a rally after the break at the weekend to claim a vital win against Luton like in recent results against Aston Villa, Crystal Palace and Brighton.

Postecoglou’s side have not scored in the first half at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in 2024 – a run of seven matches since Pape Matar Sarr’s ninth-minute goal against Bournemouth on New Year’s Eve – but the 58-year-old is unfazed by the statistic.

“The disappointing thing about the first half is the goal we conceded,” Postecoglou insisted. “Our football was good. We created good chances, one-vs-ones, we hit the post, they blocked quite a few shots and they defended desperately.

“I think overall there was nothing wrong with our football. The goal we conceded, that was poor and that’s something we need to address. With a lot of our football, it becomes a war of attrition. We need to put pressure on the opposition because we know we’re going to run our games really strongly.”

David Moyes has told angry West Ham fans that on-loan midfielder Kalvin Phillips needs their support, not their abuse.

Phillips’ unhappy loan stint at West Ham hit a new low on Saturday after he was involved in an angry exchange with supporters following the 4-3 Premier League defeat by Newcastle.

The 28-year-old was captured apparently giving a middle-finger gesture towards fans who had criticised him as he boarded the team bus.

But Moyes refused to condemn Phillips’ actions and urged the London Stadium crowd to get behind the England international.

“Kalvin’s a human being and can do things which we all do at difficult times,” said the Hammers boss.

Ange Postecoglou has talked up Brennan Johnson’s growing influence and is impressed with how he has handled his debut season at Tottenham.

Johnson joined Spurs on transfer deadline day in September for a £47.5million fee from Nottingham Forest and initially struggled to make his mark, with only one goal during the first half of the campaign.

The Wales attacker has flourished since December though, scoring in comeback wins over Brentford and Brighton and also making key contributions off the bench against Crystal Palace and Luton in recent weeks.

Richarlison opens up on depression battle after World Cup: ‘I wanted to give up’

The Brazillian could be back in the starting lineup tonight and last week opened up on his battle with depression following the 2022 World Cup, and says speaking about his struggles with his mental health “saved my life”.

The 26-year-old was his country’s top scorer in Qatar and starred for Brazil with three goals in four games, but revealed that he struggled mentally after returning from the tournament and wanted to “give up”.

“I’d just played in a World Cup, man, at my peak,” Richarlison said. “I was reaching my limit, you know? I don’t know, I’m not going to talk about killing myself, but I was in a depression there, and I wanted to give up.

“Even I, who seemed to be mentally strong. After the World Cup it seemed like it all fell apart.

“I think the therapist, like it or not, saved me, saved my life. I only thought rubbish. Even on Google, I only searched for rubbish, I only wanted to see rubbish about death.”

Son Heung-min’s 86th-minute winner helped Tottenham get their Champions League qualification hopes back on track with a 2-1 home victory over Luton.

Luton made the perfect start in north London when Tahith Chong rifled them ahead after three minutes and Rob Edwards’ side threatened to come away with a rare win when Spurs went another first half without a goal.

While Tottenham have now failed to score during the first 45 of seven home games in a row, Ange Postecoglou’s team produced another second-half rally thanks to substitute Brennan Johnson.

Johnson set up Issa Kabore’s 51st-minute own goal and teed up Son four minutes from time to help the hosts bounce back from their Fulham humbling two weeks ago with a much-needed victory.

Harvey Barnes came off the bench to fire Newcastle to a remarkable Premier League victory over West Ham as they fought back from two goals down to snatch the points.

The Magpies, who led through Alexander Isak’s sixth-minute penalty, trailed 3-1 with just 13 minutes remaining after Michail Antonio, Mohammed Kudus and Jarrod Bowen had struck in an incident-packed contest during which referee Rob Jones was at the centre of the action throughout.

However, a second Isak penalty reduced the deficit before Barnes levelled with seven minutes remaining to set up a grandstand finish, during which he secured a 4-3 win with a stunning 90th-minute strike before Anthony Gordon was sent off for a second bookable offence.
