Wells signs with Marian to continue baseball career

Mar. 20—LEBANON — Corbin Wells established himself as one of the top pitchers in the state a season ago.

Now, as he approaches his final season as a Lebanon Tiger, Wells knows where he will be continuing his baseball journey.

The Tiger standout is heading to Marian University to continue his academic and baseball careers.

He had a signing ceremony at the school on Wednesday.

"I am really excited," Wells said of making it official. "I'm excited to take that next step and helping Marian any way I can when I get there."

Marian is an NAIA program coached by Todd Bacon.

The Knights, who play in the Crossroads League, have started the season off with a 12-11 record this year.

"I really liked the knowledge of the coaches," Wells said. "They have a beautiful campus, a winning program and I want to contribute to their winning culture."

Wells was a 5-1 last year with an ERA of 0.69 that was eighth best in the state.

He struck out 69 in 50.2 innings, allowing just 32 hits and five earned runs all season.

The highlight of the season came in the sectional against Monrovia, where he threw a six inning perfect game, striking out nine.

He followed that up with 5.2 innings of shutout baseball in the sectional final.

At the plate, he hit .302 with 20 RBIs and 14 runs scored.

"The coach liked that I threw strikes and I was effective," Wells said. "He liked that I was left handed, that was a big plus in what they were looking for."

Wells and the Tigers are just getting ready to get this season underway. He said during the off-season he has worked on a few things, and has some big goals both individually and as a team for the Tigers.

"I want to enjoy this last year of high school baseball," Wells said. "I have worked a lot on my craft to get ready. I want to get my ERA even lower this year and always keep pushing myself."

When asked what he would remember the most about playing for Lebanon, Wells said it was the relationships he created along the way that will stick out the most.

"The environment — my teammates and coaches," Wells said. "They have all been great."

Wells plans on studying logistics and supply chain management.
