Who will be this week's Providence Journal Girls Basketball Player of the Week? It's up to you

The last full week of high school basketball saw the quality of play continue to increase as big-game players step up and make some big-game plays.

With the postseason getting closer, the players who will step up and help carry their teams to greatness are showing their faces. This week was no exception.

Finding five nominees for this week’s Providence Journal Player of the Week wasn’t difficult. As always, narrowing the list of potential nominees to just five was. Now comes the truly difficult part – picking a winner.

Who wins this week’s Player of the Week is up to you, the reader.

The award is meant to be an interactive way for members of the state’s basketball community to get involved. There’s no prize for winning, other than bragging rights. If you want to win, we encourage getting social media campaigns going so friends, families, fans, classmates and communities can help one of their own.

Voting is open to all readers. You can vote as much as you’d like each day between now and when the polls close on Thursday. The winner will be announced Friday morning.

Think we missed someone? Nominees are selected from the games the Journal covers in person and games that are reported by coaches and posted in our nightly recaps.

Reporting scores on the home team. We ask home team coaches to either call in results at (401)) 277-7340 or email a photo of the completed scorebook to PJSports@ProvidenceJournal.com. Results must be sent in by 10 p.m. the night of a game.

Finley Carr, South Kingstown

The senior was instrumental in the Rebels’ 2-0 week. Her first game of the week was her best, as Carr put up 21 and grabbed seven rebounds in a 54-49 win over Westerly. Two days later, Carr had another double-digit effort with 10 points in a hard-fought victory over Scituate.

Arielly DeAndrade, Central Falls

DeAndrade’s spectacular freshman campaign continued this week. She came up big Monday with 19 points and 15 rebounds as the Warriors won their second D-III game of the year with a 56-46 win over Burrillville.

Grace Martone, La Salle

The All-Stater very much played the part in the Rams’ two wins this week. Martone came through with 19 points and a tough defensive effort in a 42-22 win over Portsmouth Tuesday, then dropped 17 as LaSalle took care of Scituate, 55-45.

The Eagles continued to fly high this week and Prince-Baquero was at the center of both wins. Her play at the point helped Barrington’s offense race past Juanita Sanchez, 59-35,and two days later she came up with a season-best 25 points as the Eagles down Cranston West.

Jaina Yekelchik, Ponaganset

After a tough loss to Cranston West on Tuesday, Yekelchik had a night to remember on Thursday. The senior needed 18 points to reach 1,000 for her career and after a 17-point first half, managed to so with a layup in the second half as the Chieftains took down St. Raphael.
