Weekly Roundup: Winter sports get into full gear Dec. 4-9

The winter season is here as the rest of the sports joined boys basketball and hockey.

Here's how the first full week of events went down in Lenawee County:

SUNDAY

MONDAY

Boys Basketball

Madison 56, Lenawee Christian 55

MADISON TWP. — Jayden Saad made the biggest shots at the biggest moments giving Madison a big win.

Saad scored 17 points, including three 3-pointers in the first half and a big free throw with seven seconds remaining in the game, as the Trojans topped the Cougars in a big early-season tilt.

“I feel like once I hit the first three, the rest are automatic for me,” Saad said. “When we come out and hit shots like that, we get a lot of confidence going.”

LCS (2-1) has gained statewide attention in Division 4 polls. Brandon Summer broke an 8-8 tie with a driving layup early in the second quarter before Jaxon Salenbien made a 3-point play and back-to-back buckets pushed it to 17-8. It was 19-10 on Summer’s bucket with 4:30 left in the half when Madison (2-1) settled in on the defensive end of the floor.

“We made a few young mistakes,” Madison coach Erik Thompson said. “That will happen. At one point I looked up and we had a couple of freshmen and couple of sophomores out there. When we lock down on defense, it helps our offense.”

Saad hit his second 3-pointer of the half with 58 seconds left in the second quarter to pull Madison within 22-19. Bryce Jordan scored to make it 22-21 before Saad buried another triple to put the Trojans up 24-22 going into halftime.

“He’s one of our best shooters,” Thompson said. “We run sets for him. Tonight, he delivered. We are hoping to get more out of him.”

Aidan Kaulins, who hit a pair of 3-pointers in the third quarter, got a steal and made a layup with 20 seconds left to pull LCS within two at 54-52. Derrell Tillman hit one of two free throws to make it 55-52. LCS had a chance to tie the game, but turned the ball over with 10.5 seconds remaining.

When Madison got the ball back, it went to Saad, who was fouled and made the first free throw to put the Trojans up four.

Kaulins hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer for the 56-55 final.

“That free throw was huge,” Saad said. “I’m glad I hit that. If not, we might have been going to overtime.”

Thompson praised the defensive effort of his 2-1 squad, especially Tillman and Brian Dopp.

“We beat a good team,” he said, adding that Dopp and Tillman did “the little things that do not show up in the stats. It was a great team effort."

In addition to the 17 points by Saad, Jordan finished with 16 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Antonio Nieto had 12 points, four rebounds, three steals and three assists.
