Weekend sports roundup: Gap, Grace girls; Wilson boys win. Gap wrestling claims regional crown

Buffalo Gap won for the ninth time in 10 games and improved to 17-3 on the season Saturday night with a 66-51 win over Wilson Memorial in girls basketball.

Hannah Coffman had a monster game with 30 points, 17 rebounds, nine steals and three blocks. Kayleigh Hemp finished with 11 points for the Bison, while Chloe Emurian had seven points and 11 rebounds. The Bison are now 9-0 in district play.

Wilson fell to 11-8 overall and 7-3 in the Shenandoah District. The Hornets got 15 points from both Elise Bradley and Sabrina Reeves in the loss. CC Robinson added 13 points.

The Wilson Memorial boys placed four players in double figures in a 91-53 win over Buffalo Gap Saturday. Wilson improved to 11-7 overall and 6-3 in the Shenandoah District. Wilson has won four straight games.

Chase Snyder and Keyvon Jones both finished with 15 points for the Hornets, while Grant Wright added 13 points and eight rebounds and Mason McWhorter had 10 points for Wilson.

Grace Christian's girls edged Blue Ridge 33-30 at VSDB's gym Saturday. Kaitlyn Harper led Grace with 14 points and five rebounds while her sister Maddie Harper added 8 points. Grace improved to 13-3.

Regional wrestling

Buffalo Gap won the Class 1, Region B wrestling title Saturday, beating Franklin 198-180. It was the first time in Gap program history it has won a regional title.

Gap had six regional champions, also a first in program history: Brynan Hildebrand (113), Dalton Ashley (157), Caleb Deaver (165), Colby Yeago (190), Aiden Acord (215) and Tony Wilder (285). The Bison will have 11 in the state tournament, a program record; and Coach A.J. Dobzeniecki was named regional coach of the year.

Wilson Memorial will be sending three wrestlers to Salem for the Class 3 state tournament. Alex Jordon (190) and Cooper Brandt (113) both won regional championships while Isaac Stevens (106) was third.

Staunton's Alex Arroyo (113) and Landon Dove (150) both qualified for states with fourth-place finishes. Waynesboro's had three wrestlers qualify: Cameron Newsome (215) finished second, while Jaiden Braden (132) and Kian Jones (190) both finished fourth.

The Class 1 through 3 state tournament is set for Feb. 16-17 in Salem.

Riverheads, the Shenandoah District champion, will host the Region 2B tournament Saturday, Feb. 10 The event includes Fort Defiance and Stuarts Draft.
