Week 7 Football: Maine-Endwell rolls over Johnson City; Horseheads denied top seed

Four first-quarter touchdowns had Maine-Endwell well-positioned against visiting Johnson City on Saturday and the Spartans extended their football win streak to a 29th game with a 49-6 victory.

Maine-Endwell scored on its first offensive play following Jaden Branch’s interception and return 43 seconds into the contest, and made it 14-0 when Austyn Nyschot and Jack Hennessey hooked up for a 31-yard TD pass and Hennessey kicked the PAT 4:01 into play.

Tyler Mathews rushed for points from 8 yards and T.J. Serkiz completed a three-play, 65-yard drive with a 3-yard rushing TD in the first quarter’s final minute. The latter score was set up by Landon Rollo’s 42-yard gain.

Maine-Endwell, 7-0 and ranked No. 1 among New York’s Class B teams, has yet to be held short of a 41-point output. The Spartans close regular season play Oct. 27 at Norwich.

Johnson City, which had won its previous two games, is 2-5.

Vestal drops Horseheads

Cam Schaffer passed for two touchdowns Friday night as the Vestal football team denied Horseheads' bid to secure the top seed for the Section 4 Class A playoffs with a 28-7 victory over the host Blue Raiders.

Schaffer hit JT Gannon with a perfectly lofted 22-yard touchdown toss in the first half and added a 32-yard scoring pass to Noah Kintner in the second half.

Gannon also factored in Vestal's other first-half touchdown. His quarterback sack led to a fumble that Logan McNamara returned 42 yards for a touchdown to help the Golden Bears lead 13-0 at the intermission.

Liam Nealy's 2-yard touchdown run and a two-point conversion gave Vestal a 21-0 lead. The Kintner TD made it 28-0.

Bryce Thomas scored on a 30-yard run for Horseheads in the fourth quarter. He led Horseheads with 63 yards on six rushes. Dominic Cardinale completed three passes for 61 yards for the Raiders.

The outcome left Horseheads (6-2), Vestal (6-1) and Union-Endicott (2-5) with final division records of 1-1 in Division II. Playoff seeds will come down to points. The top seed receives a bye into the Section 4 Class A final while the other two meet in the semifinal.
