Week 4 Delaware high school football roundup: Dover makes history with win over Salesianum

DOVER – It just kept getting better for Nahseem Cosme on Friday night.

Dover’s senior quarterback was named Homecoming King at halftime. Then he broke the game open with a 40-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter as the Senators scored a historic, 27-16 victory over Salesianum.

“It means a lot,” Cosme said of his huge performance. “It just puts a smile on my face, and tomorrow I’m going to have an even better day at the dance.”

Most of the Senators were smiling and dancing after beating the Sals for the first time since 1988.

“It definitely was a dogfight, I’m not gonna lie,” said defensive lineman Mikey Stevenson, who helped hold Sallies’ potent running attack to 93 yards on 40 carries. “… We prepared and came out attacking.”

The Sals (3-1) jumped to a 7-0 lead on Brian Alleyne’s 57-yard touchdown bomb to Ben Anton.

But Dover running back Jakwon Kilby broke loose up the middle for scoring bursts of 60 and 5 yards to push the Senators ahead 14-7 early in the second quarter.

“My linemen, they set up the blocks,” said Kilby, who finished with 21 carries for 160 yards. “I did what I do best, make people miss.”

Sallies pulled within 14-10 on Colin Maradik’s 25-yard field goal with 4:51 left in the third quarter.

But the Senators’ John Parker punched in an 8-yard touchdown run, and Cosme found a seam down the right side and went 40 yards to make it 27-10 with 9:20 to play.

Quarterback Ryan Stoehr scored on a 13-yard keeper for Sallies with 6:50 left, but the visitors could get no closer.

Cosme finished with 113 yards on 12 carries, and Parker added 40 yards on seven carries as the Senators piled up 332 yards on the ground.

Alleyne worked hard for 49 yards on 25 carries for the Sals. Stoehr completed 12 of 24 passes for 144 yards, with Anton catching four for 117 yards.

Smyrna 48, Appoquinimink 16

SMYRA – Phoenix Henrqiuez and Tim Yancy each recorded a pair of touchdowns as the Eagles (1-3) downed the Jaguars (2-2).

Henriquez hauled in an 83-yard touchdown pass from Jacob Tiberi on the first play from scrimmage. The sophomore then caught a 10-yard touchdown from Drew Marks on Smyrna’s next drive.

Marks threw for three touchdowns. Yancy caught one for 11 yards and Andre Ashley added a 36-yard TD reception.

Yancy, Chrystian Carroll and Kahmaj Kearney each contributed a rushing touchdown for Smyrna.

The Eagles’ defense forced four turnovers. Triston Williams and Dylan Harris each had an interception, while Dillan Wessell and Caleb Blane recovered fumbles.

Appoquinimink was led by Noah Hoff, who caught fourth-quarter touchdown passes of 74 and 23 yards from Blake Caccamo.

Odessa 34, Sussex Tech 7

ODESSA – Jalen Lingham and Azhir Bellamy each scored a pair of touchdowns to spark the Ducks (1-3) past the Ravens (3-1).

Lingham picked up teammate Chase Berlin’s fumble and returned it for a touchdown. He followed with 71-yard score on a punt return on the final play of the first quarter.

Bellamy’s first touchdown came a 5-yard pass from JC Alley late in the second quarter. His second score was on a 4-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Hodgson 35, Cape Henlopen 0

LEWES – The Silver Eagles (3-1) scored in each quarter on the way to a shutout victory over the Vikings (3-1).

Maki Beach ran for touchdowns of 5 and 48 yards, while Xavier Brown rushed for a 1-yard score and threw a 13-yard TD pass to Nybree Davis.

Mark Nelson also found the end zone for Hodgson on an 11-yard run.

Tatnall 44, Dickinson 0

MILLTOWN – Rahshan LaMons passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more as the Hornets (3-1, 2-0 District 1A-1) earned an easy road win over the Rams (0-4, 0-2).

After an early safety, LaMons tossed scoring strikes of 38 yards to Jayden Minor and 16 yards to Chris Gordon for a 16-0 lead.

Then Jack Homer returned an interception for a 19-yard touchdown and LaMons scored from the 7 to make it 30-0 after one quarter.

The Hornets’ final two TDs came on a 39-yard run by LaMons and a 2-yard run by Micah Stamper.

Caravel 28, Archmere 2

GLASGOW – All four of the Buccaneers’ (4-0) touchdowns came on the ground as the top-ranked team in Class 2A pulled away from the Auks (1-3).

Archmere’s Cole Fenice had five receptions for 53 yards and was in on nine tackles.

The Auks’ P.J. Blessington was part of 10 tackles, while Miles Kempski made seven tackles and Brendan Burke had seven tackles and a fumble recovery.

Delmar 35, Indian River 14

DAGSBORO – The Class 2A Wildcats (3-2) broke open a tie game with two third-quarter touchdowns and went on to down the Indians (3-1), who came in ranked No. 1 in Class 1A.

Indian River opened the scoring with a 60-yard touchdown pass from Dylan Grise to Darnell Stokes. Delmar’s Kweli Jones answered with a 25-yard scoring run for a 7-7 tie at halftime.

The Wildcats jumped ahead 21-7 in the third quarter on an 8-yard TD run by John Carter Powell and an 80-yard burst by Connor Nichols.

Rashad Hopkins returned a fumble 38 yards for an Indian River touchdown, but Delmar pulled away with a 3-yard TD run by Brandon Turner and a 40-yard interception return for a touchdown by Ashton Baine.

Delaware Military Academy 54, Elkton (Md.) 19

WILMINGTON – Edwards Emmens rushed 11 times for 199 yards and five touchdowns as the Seahawks (2-2) cruised past the Elks (2-3) in their home opener.

DMA quarterback Odell Teel added 129 yards and two touchdowns rushing and 134 yards and another score through the air.

Teel and Emmens each scored on 23-yard runs and Josh Roy added a 26-yard rushing TD for a 19-0 lead after one quarter.

Then Emmens broke free for a 47-yard score and Malcolm Roy caught a 29-yard touchdown pass from Teel.

Emmens went on to add scoring runs of 14, 36 and 62 yards, and Teel found the end zone again on a 48-yard burst.

Sussex Central 28, South Carroll (Md.) 0

SYKESVILLE, Md. – Jajuan Sturgis carried seven times for 46 yards and two touchdowns as the Golden Knights (3-1) shut out the Cavaliers (0-5).

Kevon Moore-Briddell rushed 10 times for 76 yards and a score for Sussex Central, while Bradley Chavez scored a 30-yard TD on his only carry.

Gabe Cannon completed 5 of 13 passes for 122 yards, with Will Harmon catching two for 63 yards. Harmon also rushed seven times for 69 yards.

Saturday’s games

St. Georges 20, William Penn 19

MIDDLETOWN – Emory Womack caught a tipped pass over the middle from Tim Whichard, eluded a defender and broke free for a 33-yard touchdown with 23 seconds left as the Hawks (2-2) prevailed in a back-and-forth game with the Colonials (3-1).

William Penn had taken a 19-14 lead on Josiah Everett’s 36-yard touchdown bomb to Phillip Exum with 1:40 remaining.

Then Whichard, who finished 18 of 35 passing for 259 yards, completed five throws for 82 yards on the winning drive.

St. Georges went up 8-0 on Whichard’s 76-yard pass to Jayson Askins-Brooks.

Then the Colonials scored twice late in the second quarter, with Everett finding Mark Moore for a 74-yard TD and Matthew Bishop returning an interception for a 40-yard score and a 13-8 lead.

The Hawks went to the ground game in the third quarter, with Terry White bulling in from the 3 for a 14-13 lead.

Then came a touchdown from each team in the frenzied final two minutes.

White finished with 79 yards on 27 carries, while Askins-Brooks caught seven passes for 145 yards for the Hawks.

Everett completed 10 of 20 passes for 149 yards for William Penn.

Charter of Wilmington 21, Christiana 0

CHRISTIANA – Roman Paoli passed for three touchdowns as the Force (3-1, 2-0 District 1A-1) earned a shutout victory over the Vikings (1-3, 1-1).

Paoli’s scoring tosses covered 15 and 2 yards to Juan Aldas and 35 yards to Richard Conway.

Conrad 40, St. Andrew’s 21

WILMINGTON – Gabe Welsh passed for four touchdowns as the Red Wolves (2-2, 1-1 District 1A-2) outscored the Saints (1-3, 1-1).

Jaydon Wells-Huff caught three of Welsh’s scoring throws, covering 20, 1 and 33 yards. Cael Mellon brought in the other from 32 yards out.

Welsh also scored on a 1-yard run, and Charles Shute returned a fumble 100 yards for a Red Wolves touchdown.

Thomas White completed 28 of 50 passes for 275 yards, including a 4-yard scoring strike to Toby Nix, for St. Andrew’s.

White also scored on a 2-yard run, and Reinardo Quinones scored on a 7-yard run.

Yasir Felton had 11 receptions for 135 yards for the Saints.

Delcastle 52, McKean 0

BELVEDERE – Aidan Hill passed for two touchdowns and rushed for two more as the Cougars (1-3) ended a 13-game losing streak with a resounding victory over the Highlanders (0-4).

Tzion Allen caught both of Hill’s scoring strikes, one going for 85 yards. Hill also rushed six times for 84 yards.

William Teel and Amir Bambaata also scored rushing touchdowns for Delcastle, and Hill and Teel also added interceptions.

Rahmeir Berry rushed 12 times for 116 yards for the Cougars.

Wilmington Friends 38, Brandywine 35

ALAPOCAS – Andrew McKenzie passed for three touchdowns, ran for another and returned a kickoff for a fifth score as the Quakers (4-0) outlasted the Bulldogs (2-2) in overtime.

McKenzie rushed 27 times for 108 yards, including a 10-yard TD. He also completed 12 of 17 passes for 159 yards, including scoring strikes of 25 yards to Eamonn Grubb, 3 yards to Jaxon Black and 24 yards to Jason Hughes. McKenzie’s TD on the kickoff return covered 90 yards.

Hughes made six catches for 90 yards and also had an interception.

Kato Connor kicked a 27-yard field goal to win it in overtime for the Quakers.

Brandywine’s Crisdon Wright rushed for touchdowns of 7, 11 and 11 yards and threw a 10-yard scoring pass to Kahseer Williams. Kameron Campbell also scored on a 4-yard run for the Bulldogs.

Howard 38, Lake Forest 30

FELTON – R.J. Matthews completed 15 of 24 passes for 395 yards and four touchdowns as the Wildcats (2-3) went on the road and outlasted the Spartans (2-3).

Matthews also rushed six times for 34 yards and a touchdown.
