Week 10 Top Performers: District Champions are crowned

HILLSDALE COUNTY — Week 10 saw district wrestling tournaments crown champions and send grapplers onto the next round of wrestling action in the march to Ford Field. Last week also saw student-athletes reach career points milestones for their prep basketball careers.

This is a recap of some of the top performances from Week 10 of the winter sports season. (This list may be updated as more results are shared)

Prep Hoops

Blonde and Elder combine for 50 points in overtime win for Jonesville boys basketball

Freshman Caleb Blonde and senior Warrick Elder led the Comet boys varsity basketball team to a 72-65 overtime win against Columbia Central.

Blonde had 26 points and Elder had 24 points.

Blonde and Elder would each have an additional 13 points in their loss to Hanover-Horton. Teammate Gavin Van Kampen had 20 points and 13 rebounds against Hanover-Horton.

Dominic Scharer passes 1,000 with two double-digit scoring nights

Hillsdale Academy senior Dominic Scharer passed 1,000-career points this week, helping the Colts earn their 14th and 15th wins of the season. The Colts are still undefeated in SCAA East play after beating Bellevue 54-40 and Tekonsha 67-25 on homecoming night.

Scharer helped lead the team to victory with 17 points against the Broncos and 19 points against Tekonsha.

Gavyn Carden drops in seven 3-pointers against Reading in big win

The Pittsford Wildcats ended the week with two victories, a 56-43 win over Reading and a 63-31 win over Camden-Frontier.

Wildcat senior Gavyn Carden had 23 points and seven 3-pointers against Reading. The senior had 15 points and three more triples against Camden-Frontier.

Ava Mallar passes 1,000 points and scores 32 points during Week 10

Despite the loss against Reading to start the week, the Wildcats had something to celebrate after their game. Pittsford junior Ava Mallar scored 20 points that night and passed the 1,000-career points milestone. The junior added 12 more points to her weekly stat line in a 34-11 win over Camden-Frontier.

Terrier girls basketball players lead team to two big wins

The Litchfield varsity girls basketball team won two big games by double digits in Week 10. They beat WCA 57-22 and Waldron 47-31 to end the week 2-0.

Against WCA, senior Jenna Miller had 16 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Abby Bills had 12 points. Senior Addie McLouth had 10 points.

Against Waldron, Bills scored 17 points.

Waldron boys basketball sophomore Seth Williams leads team to homecoming win

Waldron boys basketball ended its week with two victories, one against Litchfield and another on homecoming against Will Carleton Academy.

Seth Williams had 14 points in both games. Against Litchfield, the sophomore hit 10 of his 12 free throw opportunities.

Williams had an additional eight points against Britton Deerfield.

Kailee Kurtz leads Waldron to 2-1 record in Week 10

Junior girls basketball star Kailee Kurtz led the Waldron Spartans to a 35-31 win over Britton Deerfield and a 53-13 win over WCA.

Against Britton Deerfield, Kurtz had 13 points. Kurtz led the team with 14 points against WCA on homecoming. The junior had an additional 12 points in the team's loss to Litchfield.

Comet girls basketball has multiple players shine in two overtime wins

The Jonesville varsity girls basketball team needed a true team effort to win their 42-38 overtime game against Hanover-Horton and their 51-44 double overtime win against Manchester.

Junior Haley Mach had 15 points against Manchester. Alexis Trine had a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds. Natalynn Beach had eight points and 12 rebounds.

Against Hanover-Horton, senior Gracen Hager had 10 points. Mach had another nine points. Trine had seven points.

Hager had an additional six points in the team's loss to Leslie. Mach had five. Reese Stanton led the team with eight points.

Pair of junior basketball athletes lead Reading girls to win over Pittsford

Two junior basketball players for Reading led the team to a 41-37 victory over Pittsford.

Junior Ranger Jenna Londeau had 13 points, including three triples. Aubree Ervans had 13 points, including five from the free throw line.

WCA sweeps Marshall Academy thanks to efforts from multiple athletes

The Will Carleton Academy varsity boys and girls basketball teams swept Marshall Academy in a doubleheader night of prep hoops.

The boys team won 72-55 and was led by junior Tyler Slade who scored 22 points, senior Tyler Barnes who scored 20, and junior Thomas Maier who scored 15.

The girls team won 43-29 and was led by eighth grader Kherington Ladd who scored 13 points, sophomore Madison Recob who scored 10 and junior Kristin Recob who scored eight.

Bowles and Adams reach 20 points in close Hornet boys hoops losses

Hillsdale senior Jack Bowles scored 26 points for the Hornets in their 54-52 loss to the Clinton Redwolves.

Hillsdale junior Brody Adams led the team with 23 points in their 57-54 loss to Madison later in the week. That 23 points included three triples. Bowles would score 16 more points against Madison. Adams had eight against Clinton.

Regan Schaedler scores 16 for Camden-Frontier

Despite a loss to Athens earlier in the week, Camden-Frontier girls basketball sophomore Regan Schaedler scored 16 points and had an impressive game on the defensive end of the court.

Wrestling district champions

A trio of county grapplers won individual district championships for their teams.

Jonesville senior Evan McColley, Hillsdale senior Stephen Petersen and Hillsdale junior John Petersen all won district championships in their respective weight classes and move on to the regional tournament in Week 11.

Wrestlers earning medals at districts

Several other wrestlers from Hillsdale, Jonesville and Reading earned medals at districts.

Reading had three runner-up medalists: Isaac Westfall, Reid Westfall and Connar Rudy. Dylan McCallister took third place. Lukas Strine, Jeremiah Bedford and Cayleb Wright all took fourth place. All seven grapplers will move on to regionals.

For Hillsdale, Wyatt Wahtola and Miles Brown both took fourth place and move on to the regional rounds.

For Jonesville, Cooper Stevens and Blake Ryan both took runner-up honors in their weight classes. Isaac Shively, Ben Colbart and Carson Playford took fourth place in their respective weight classes. All four wrestlers will move on to the regional tournament.

Bowling

The boys team won 18-12. Collin Mullaly had a 397 series. Charles Macy had a 427 series. Nolan Grant led the team with a 447 series.

The Hillsdale varsity bowling teams faced Hudson during the week. The girls team lost their first match of the season. Shalee Van Heerde had a 395 series. Chloe Manifold had a 422 series.

The Jonesville Comets defeated East Jackson during a league match. The girls team won 29-1, with baker games totals of 144-137-281.

Leading the way for the Comet girls bowling team were Mikayla DeBoe and Hailie James. Both bowlers ended up at a pin total of 341 after two games. The team lost just one game in total during the match.

The Boys team won every single game of their matchup with East Jackson for a 30-0 finish in total points won. They had baker games totals of 174-217-391. The team was led by Andrew Sackett who had a series total of 268-242-511. Matt Woodruff had a series total of 216-214-430.
