Seven Rangers medal at wrestling districts and move on to the regional tournament

DANSVILLE — It was district championship week for the Reading wrestling team. After falling to Hudson at the team district finals, the Ranger wrestlers and coaching staff geared up for another crack at continuing their journeys to Ford Field.

They traveled to Dansville for the District 29-4 tournament. After a long day of tournament matches, the Rangers left Dansville with seven grapplers earning spots on the podium in their respective weight classes. All seven grapplers earned the right to compete at the regional tournament for a shot at qualifying for state. Top four finishers in each weight class move on to the finals. Leading the way for the Rangers were three grapplers who took runner-up spots in their weight classes: Isaac Westfall, Connar Rudy and Reid Westfall.

Freshman Isaac Westfall took second place in the 215-weight class. Westfall earned a shot at first place with two pinfalls in the quarterfinals and semifinals (just over a minute in the semifinal match). He would fall in the first place match, earning runner-up.

Freshman Reid Westfall (106) had two bye rounds before the semifinals where he got a 14-0 major decision. Westfall would earn runner-up honors after losing a tough 5-0 decision match in the championship round.

Senior Connar Rudy (165) battled to the first place match after winning a quarterfinal via pinfall and winning a semifinal in sudden victory 14-12. Rudy battled through all three periods in the title match but fell via major decision, taking second overall.

Reading Medalists

At 285, Cayleb Wright had a pinfall after just 45 seconds in the quarterfinals. Wright fell via pinfall in the semifinals and would receive a consolation round bye. He would lose the third place match but qualifies for the regional tournament with fourth place.

At 113, Dylan McCallister wrestled to third place. McCallister had a pinfall win in the quarterfinals before losing in the semifinals, dropping into the consolation semifinal round. McCallister earned a pinfall just over a minute into the match. McCallister would then earn a 7-5 decision victory in the medalist round to take third.

Senior Jeremiah Bedford (144) had a 5-3 decision win in the quarterfinals before losing in the semifinals, dropping into the consolation rounds. He would qualify for the championship round with a pinfall win over teammate Gavin Wright in the consolation semifinals. Bedford would lose in the third place match, ending up in fourth place and qualifying for the regional tourney. Teammate Gavin Wright had a pinfall and sudden victory (5-3) before wrestling Bedford in the consolation round.

At 175, Lukas Strine won via pinfall in the quarterfinals before losing in the semifinals and dropping to the consolation round. In the consolation semifinals, Strine earned another pinfall to make it to the third-place match. After a tough battle, Strine took fourth after losing a 3-1 decision, qualifying for the regional tournament.

Also earning a pinfall during the district tournament was Caiden Baker (157).

Next Saturday, Feb. 17 is the regional tournament. District 29-4 will meet up with District 30-4 medalists at Hudson for the 15-4 regional championship tournament. Wrestling starts at 9 a.m. Medalists will earn their way to the individual state finals held at Ford Field on March 1-3.
