Week 1: Here are storylines to watch in the Big Bend as fall sports regular season start

Preseason fever struck the Big Bend last week, with football, volleyball and cross country all getting a final tuneup before the regular season kicks off.

As the wins and losses start to matter for teams around the Big Bend, and the room for error has shrunk, there is plenty to keep an eye on this week as fall sports get started.

Here are the storylines to watch during this week's competition.

Volleyball season gets off to a quick start

Lincoln junior Sydney Carroll (24) celebrates a point with junior Ashlyn Koerner (12) during the North Florida Preseason Classic on Aug. 20, 2022, at Chiles High School.

The Big Bend volleyball season gets underway Monday evening, as six area programs begin the months-long journey to try and win a state championship.

Monday's games include: Ocala Christian at Aucilla Christian, Marianna at Maclay, Wewahitchka at Jefferson County, Community Leadership Academy at FAMU DRS and Madison County visit Suwannee.

Despite it being the opening week of the season, there are some highlight matchups taking place. On Tuesday Lincoln host 3A District 1 champions Pensacola Catholic in an early season battle between two teams with deep playoff run chances.

Mosely plays two Big Bend powerhouses, getting a 6A District 2 title rematch with Chiles on Wednesday and a home match with Leon on Thursday. Rickards and Godby take the court against each other for the first time this fall on Tuesday.

With multiple area programs hoping to lift silverware at the end of the season, be it a district title or state title, there are plenty of week one tests for Big Bend teams to pass. This week could be a chance for schools to make a statement for the upcoming season.

What adjustments do Football teams make after preseason

Kickoff Classic week gave us a sneak peek at what area teams will look like this season. State champion hopefuls Wakulla and Florida High were both tested, with the War Eagles picking up a comeback win over Madison County, and Florida High beating Chiles behind an impressive junior varsity display.

Chiles, whose varsity team frustrated Florida High, winning the two quarters of varsity play 7-6, host Wakulla on Friday and could be a stiff test for the War Eagles. Florida High travel to Trinity Catholic for a big-time week one matchup. Lincoln, who dominated Mosley 35-0, travel and face Pace to kick off a season filled with high expectations.

A matchup between North Florida Christian and Leon gives us a matchup between two Big Bend schools, both wanting to win and start their respective seasons on the right foot.

The biggest thing to watch for this week is the adjustments that programs make after preseason action. What adjustments to the game plan will be implemented, which players earned more minutes, who earned less, these are all questions that will be answered come kickoff Friday night.
