Wednesday's Top Prep Performers: Gomez throws Oxnard's first no-hitter since 2019

Senior left-hander Nate Gomez pitched a no-hitter with nine strikeouts, Gavin Ramos went 1 for 3 with three RBIs, and Max Garcia was 1 for 3 with two RBIs to lead the Oxnard High baseball team to a 7-1 win over Milken in a nonleague game at Encino Little League Complex on Wednesday.

Gomez, who starred for the basketball team in the winter season and was selected to The Star's All-County First Team, threw the first no-hitter for the Yellowjackets since RJ Aranda had one in 2019. He also went 2 for 3 at the plate for the Yellowjackets (7-8).

BASEBALL

  • Dylan Volantis allowed four hits while striking out 10 in six scoreless innings, Kaden Youmans pitched four hitless and scoreless innings with four strikeouts, and Noah Stead was 2 for 5 to lead Westlake (12-2, 3-2) to a 1-0, 11-inning win over Thousand Oaks in a Marmonte League game. Daniel Morge allowed six hits while striking out seven in six scoreless innings, Jameson Berigan allowed two hits and no earned runs while striking out seven in 4.2 innings, and Max Fernandez went 2 for 5 for the Lancers (8-7, 2-3).

  • Lee Atkinson allowed one run while striking out five in five innings, Luc Olson earned the save with two scoreless innings, and AJ Seidel had a two-run triple to lead Calabasas (10-5, 4-1) to a 2-1 win over Newbury Park (7-6, 2-3) in a Marmonte League game. Cameron Fausset allowed three hits and two runs while striking out six in 5.2 innings, Paul Lizzul went 2 for 3, and Luke Medhurst was 1 for 3 with an RBI for the Panthers (7-6, 2-3).

  • Ty Hanley allowed one run on four hits while striking seven in a complete-game effort, Carson Sheffer was 2 for 3 with an RBI, Mckenzie Parks went 2 for 3 with a double, and Elijah Clayton was 1 for 3 with an RBI and three stolen bases to lead Oaks Christian (7-5, 3-2) to a 6-1 win over Agoura (8-7, 2-3) in a Marmonte League game. Tyler Starling went 2 for 2, Gavin Trafficanda was 1 for 2 with an RBI, and Braden Oliver went 1 for 3 for the Chargers (8-7, 2-3).

  • Caden Sramek struck out six and allowed two hits in four shutout innings, Colten Rainer struck out four and allowed two hits in four shutout innings, and Zach Nagy went 2 for 5 with an RBI to lead Royal (13-6) to a 2-1, 10-inning victory over Ventura in a nonleague game. Shane Farrell allowed one hit in seven shutout innings and Landen Roak had a hit and an RBI for the Cougars (9-7).

  • Aidan Sanchez had an RBI single in the top of the seventh inning, Ruben Venegas allowed six hits while striking out nine in 6.1 scoreless innings, and Santiago Ramirez got the final out with runners on second and third for the save as Santa Paula (9-5, 7-0) beat Hueneme 1-0 to stay unbeaten in Citrus Coast League play. Luis Cervantes went 2 for 4 and Koa Cunningham allowed one run on five hits with five strikeouts in 6.2 innings for the Vikings (10-5-1, 4-1).

  • Jacob Roa allowed just one hit while striking out five in 4.1 innings, Damien Valdez went 2 for 2 with two RBIs, Austin DeMello and Daniel Banuelos each had a double and an RBI, and Alec Fontyn was 1 for 3 with an RBI to lead Rio Mesa to a 6-0 victory over Ashland (Ore.) in a nonleague game.

  • Kyle Casey allowed five hits and one run in five innings and Evan Rodriguez went 2 for 3 with two doubles to lead Simi Valley (7-7-2) to a 2-1 victory over Narbonne at the San Diego Lions Tournament.

  • Jackson Weir allowed five hits and one run in five innings, Sonny De La Torre pitched two shutout innings for the save, Max Brusca went 2 for 3 with an RBI, Andrew Rosen was 1 for 3 with an RBI, and Tyler Kutsch went 2 for 3 to lead Oak Park (4-7) to a 2-1 win over Foothill Tech in a nonleague game. Aidan Gomez was 2 for 3 with an RBI, Hayden Villa went 2 for 3 with a triple, and Adam Arth struck out nine while pitching five scoreless innings for the Dragons (6-8-1).

  • Brayden Smith had the only hit for Camarillo (11-4) in its 11-0 loss to Notre Dame-Sherman Oaks in a nonleague game.

SOFTBALL

  • Angelina Apodaca went 3 for 3 with three home runs and four RBIs, Laynee Flores was 2 for 3 with a homer, double and two RBIs, Jadalynn Sovey went 2 for 4 with two RBIs, Cali Howe was 2 for 4 with two stolen bases, Alianna Rodriguez went 2 for 4, and Lea Tapia pitched four perfect innings to lead Camarillo (14-2) to a 13-5 win over Burroughs in a nonleague game.

  • Rio Mesa defeated Vista Murrieta 4-3 and lost to Orange Lutheran 7-0 at the Michelle Carew Classic. In the first game, Jasmine Reyes allowed two earned runs while striking out five in a complete-game effort and delivered the walk-off RBI single, Sarah Coccillos went 2 for 3 with a double and three runs scored, and Jocelyn Gomez and Hailey Olivera each went 1 for 3 with an RBI for the Spartans (13-3). Reyes allowed one earned run in five innings, striking out six, in the second game.

BOYS TRACK AND FIELD

  • Oxnard defeated Rio Mesa 75-52 and Pacifica 99-27 and Rio Mesa beat Pacifica 79-44 in a tri-Channel League meet. For Oxnard, Shaun Tolson won the 400 (52.02). Camren Harris won the 100 (11.04) and 200 (22.81). Owen Gonzalez won the 800 (2:06.83). Victor Mendez won the long jump (19-01). Luis Aguilera won the shot put (47-05). For Rio Mesa, Jesse Vergara won the 1,600 (4:46.24). JJ Bittner won the 110 hurdles (15.64), 300 hurdles (43.51) and discus (122-01.50). Cole Wenger won the 3,200 (10:16.16). Jackson Knowles won the high jump (5-10). For Pacifica, Douglas King won the triple jump (42-01.50).

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD

  • Oxnard defeated Rio Mesa 103-24 and Pacifica 104-23 and Rio Mesa beat Pacifica 75-52 in a tri-Channel League meet. For Oxnard, Karina Ponce won the 1,600 (5:36.39). Amia Cason won the 100 hurdles (16.96). Ali Medina won 200 (26.36) and 400 (58.93). Mariah Tutt won the 100 (12.67). Sienna Pimental won the 800 (2:30.85). Brianna Richards won the 3,200 (11:50.17). Mikayla Oliver won the long jump (16-07), triple jump (34-04) and high jump (4-08). Natalie Estrella won the shot put (33-07). For Rio Mesa, Brooklyn Bittner won the discus (97-06.50). For Pacifica, Elizabeth Nieto won the 300 hurdles (48.97).

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

  • JP Mawas finished with 35 assists, eight digs and two kills, Danny Guerrero had 11 kills, and Caiden Aguilar had 10 kills and eight digs to lead Oxnard (11-12) to a 25-22, 26-24, 25-20 sweep of St. Bonaventure in a nonleague match.

BOYS GOLF

  • Jared Abercrombie earned medalist honors with a 67 and Max Emberson and Broxton Borck each shot a 72 as Oaks Christian finished with a season-best 360 to take first place at the second Marmonte League tournament at Sunset Hills Country Club. Westlake was second with a 391, Thousand Oaks was third with a 402, Agoura was fourth with a 412, Newbury Park was fifth with a 420, and Calabasas was sixth with a 424.

BOYS SWIMMING

  • Nordhoff defeated Channel Islands 72-48 in a Citrus Coast League meet. For Nordhoff, Quin Seider won the 200 freestyle (1:39.96) and 100 butterfly (53.02). Flynn VanAuker won the 200 IM (2:11.97) and 100 backstroke (58.36). Rafael Sierra won the 50 freestyle (25.89) and 500 freestyle (6:01.87). Benjamin McSorley won the 100 breaststroke (1:06.74). For Channel Islands, Jayden Ursua won the 100 freestyle (1:00.09).

GIRLS SWIMMING

  • Nordhoff defeated Channel Islands 85-39 in a Citrus Coast League meet. For Nordhoff, Melina Seider won the 200 freestyle (2:04.83) and 500 freestyle (5:25.37). Amelie Pinkernell won the 50 freestyle (26.70) and 100 breaststroke (1:12.92). Kirra Fink won the 100 butterfly (1:16.28). Avery Monson won the 100 freestyle (1:08.41). Jayci Wingate won the 100 backstroke (1:20.19).

GIRLS LACROSSE

  • Micah Shin had seven goals and three assists, Reagan Laubner had five goals and three assists, Maya Pantoja finished with four goals, Elliana Dorsi had two goals and an assist, and Sadie Le had two goals and an assist to lead unbeaten Newbury Park (12-0) to a 21-7 win over Agoura in a Marmonte League game.
