Wednesday's Top Prep Performers from CIF-SS playoffs in five sports, and boys golf

Highlights from Wednesday in high school spring sports:

SOFTBALL

  • Mariana Palazuelos went 3 for 3 with three RBIs as second-seeded Rio Mesa opened the Division 2 playoffs with a 5-2 win over visiting Royal in a first-round game. Sarah Cocillos and Jadalynn Sovey scored two runs each and Jasmine Reyes allowed three hits over seven, striking out nine, for the Spartans (24-3-1), who will visit Whittier Christian in Tuesday's second round. Holly White, Salena Zepeda and Julianne Ogle had hits for Royal (10-10).

  • Baylany Magana scattered seven hits without a walk and Jayleen Ruiz and Alexa Gonzales each went 2 for 3 to lead Oxnard to a 3-1 victory over host Flintridge-Sacred Heart in a Division 4 first-round game. The Yellowjackets will host Schurr in a second-round game next Tuesday.

  • Analise Luna hit a walk-off grand slam as Fillmore scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat visiting Burbank in the first round of the Division 4 playoffs. The Flashes will pay either Indio or Hillcrest in the second round next Tuesday.

BASEBALL

  • Roman Muñoz pitched a three-hit shutout with four strikeouts and no walks, Landon Gaz hit a triple and a solo home run, and Taylor Busch had a three-run double to lead Moorpark to a 6-0 win over visiting Dos Pueblos in a Division 2 wild-card game. The Musketeers will play at top-seeded Aquinas in a first-round game Friday.

  • Santiago Avila allowed just one hit and no earned runs while striking out five in 4.2 innings and went 1 for 3 with a double, a walk and an RBI at the plate to lead Fillmore to a 5-2 victory over host Gladstone in a Division 7 wild-card game. The Flashes play at St. Genevieve in a first-round game Thursday.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

  • Nordhoff defeated host Godinez Fundamental in 21-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-10, 15-11 to advance to semifinals of the CIF-SS Division 5 playoffs. The Rangers will host Wiseburn Da Vinci on Saturday with a chance to reach the championship game.

BOYS LACROSSE

  • Justin Sikola scored four goals, Jack Follette finished with three goals and four assists, Aiden Whitehouse had three goals and an assist, and Colin Andrews added two goals and two assists to lead Westlake to a 16-10 win over Mira Costa in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs. The Warriors will play either Servite or Corona del Mar in a second-round game Saturday.

GIRLS LACROSSE

  • Oak Park defeated host Dos Pueblos 12-11 in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 2 playoffs. The Eagles will play at Chaminade in a second-round game Friday.

  • Royal lost 16-4 to visiting Chaminade in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 2 playoffs.

  • Simi Valley defeated host ML King 9-5 in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 3 playoffs. The Pioneers will host Huntington Beach in a second-round game Friday.

BOYS TENNIS

  • Roshan Santhosh swept in singles to lead Newbury Park to a 12-6 win over host Aliso Niguel in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs.

  • Simi Valley lost to host Brentwood 18-0 in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs.

  • Royal defeated visiting Walnut 81-70 in games after the teams tied in sets at 9-9 in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 2 playoffs. The Highlanders will play at Edison in a second-round match Friday.

  • Nordhoff defeated visiting Crescenta Valley 72-67 games after the teams tied in sets at 9-9 in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 3 playoffs. The Rangers will host St. Margaret's in a second-round match Friday.

  • Ventura lost 14-4 at top-seeded Cypress in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 3 playoffs.

  • Foothill Tech lost 11-7 at host Geffen Academy in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 3 playoffs.

  • Thacher defeated host Bishop Montgomery 13-5 in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 4 playoffs. The Toads will host West Covina in a second-round match Friday.

  • Villanova Prep defeated host Garey 13-5 in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 5 playoffs. The Wildcats will play El Monte in a second-round match Friday.

BOYS GOLF

  • Simi Valley shot a team score of 376 to win the third and final Coastal Canyon League tournament at Olivas Links Golf Club and finish as league champions. The Pioneers won the title by 76 shots to qualify for the CIF-SS team finals. Sahir Balyan shot a 73 in the final and finished with a three-round total of 221 to win the individual title and earn league MVP honors. Simi Valley's Eli Bernardo shot a 71 to finish with 224 to take second place and Simi Valley's Tyler Lumpkin shot a 78 to finish with a 227 to earn third place. Simi Valley's Anthony Nilson shot a 71 to finish with a 228 and Alex Cheng of Oak Park shot a 79 to finish with a 228 to tie for fourth place. Vineet Vallamsetty of Oak Park shot a 79 for a 229 and Kemper Wilson of Moorpark shot a 73 to finish with a 229 to tie for sixth place. The top seven players qualified for the CIF-SS Northern Regional Individual Tournament. Oak Park finished second as a team, followed by Camarillo, Moorpark and Royal.
