Wednesday's MetroWest and Milford Fantastic Five from the state tournament

Three periods weren't enough for a handful of teams in the Round of 32 on Wednesday night. Amid all of the overtimes, some players emerged as heroes and found their way into the Fantastic Five.

As the playoffs roll on, it's important to recognize the players that make the advancement happen. These Fantastic Five MetroWest and Milford athletes stood out from the crowd in the Round of 32 an beyond.

SHANE DESMOND/JAMES ERIKSON, Watertown/Wayland boys hockey

They each notched a hat trick in a 7-4 win over No. 15 St. Paul on Wednesday in Worcester. The Warriors (8-11-2) will face No. 3 Scituate (16-5-2) at 4:40 p.m. Friday at the Hobomock Arena in Pembroke.

SARAH DUMAS, Franklin girls indoor track & field

The senior All-American placed third in the MSTCA Pentathlon with 3313 points Wednesday at the Reggie Lewis Center. She won the 55-meter hurdles in 8.5 seconds and tied for second in the high jump at 5 feet, 1.75 inches. Dumas also took second in the shot put (33-11.75). Tri-County's Averie Denelle cleared 5-5.75 to tie for the best high jump mark. Algonquin's Olivia LaBelle placed fifth overall (2965), while Natick's Emmanuella Edozien finished fifth in the long jump (17-5.25).

Meet of champions: Wellesley's girls distance crew dominates

TIM O'MALLEY, Hudson boys hockey

He had two goals, including the overtime winner in a 3-2 victory over Seekonk in the Division 4 state tournament first round Wednesday. Jordan Sousa added a goal and an assist for the Hawks (13-8). Hudson will travel to top-seeded Winthrop at 2 p.m. Saturday in the round of 16. Hudson's Luke Lewis contributed an assist.

JUSTIN McCAFFERTY, Westborough boys basketball

He posted a powerful double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds in a 77-56 win over No. 37 East Longmeadow in the Division 2 preliminary round Wednesday. Alec Desrosiers hit five 3s and scored 17 points for No. 28 Westborough, who will travel to No. 5 Mansfield at 7:30 p.m. Friday for the Round of 32. Westborough's Nicholas Bellofatto added 16 points with two 3s.

CHRIS BOUVIER, Blackstone Valley Tech boys hockey

He scored a goal and assisted the other two in the No. 15 Beavers 3-2 win over No. 18 North Middlesex in the Division 3 first round Wednesday at the Blackstone Valley IcePlex in Hopedale. One assist went to Joseph Manzi for the overtime winner. The Beavers (18-3) will face the winner of Shawsheen/Hopedale in the round of 16. BVT's Max Pilkington put away a goal in the second period, while Max Krauss contributed an assist.

Brick wall: Ashland's Shane Moriarty records shutout in 3-0 playoff victory over Medway

No. 12 Franklin 3, No. 21 St. Mary's 2 (OT): Anthony Lampasona lit the lamp in overtime to send the Panthers (14-8) to the Division 1 Sweet 16 on Wednesday. Franklin will host No. 28 Weymouth (10-11-1), which upset No. 5 Archbishop Williams, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Pirelli Rink. Ben Paterson contributed two assists, while Tom Quinn and Dylan McEvoy each scored once for the Panthers. Franklin goalie Colby Wagner made 34 saves, and Langevin had an assist.

No. 3 Catholic Memorial 4, No. 30 Natick 1: Jeff Tavares saved 38 shots for the Redhawks, while Jack Byrne found the net once for Natick (8-14) in the Division 1 Round of 32 on Wednesday.

No. 16 Wellesley 3, No. 17 Belmont 2: Paddy Maxwell had an assist and the game-winning goal for the Raiders at Boston Sports Institute in the Division 1 Round of 32. Wellesley (15-4-2) will visit top-seeded St. John's Prep in the Sweet 16 at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Essex Sports Center.

No. 5 Dover-Sherborn/Weston 6, No. 28 Boston Latin 1: Brayden McKenna scored his 15th goal of the season with two assists in the Division 4 Round of 32 for the Raiders (17-4) on Wednesday. Max Niit found the net twice for D-S/Weston to send them to the Round of 16 against No. 12 Dedham at the Rivers School on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. D-S/Weston's Christos Rogaris had two assists, while Max Patenaude, Sam Hinckley and Matthias Sarnblad found the net once each for the Raiders. Sawyer Garzone, Cole McEwen and Benson contributed an assist each. Raiders goalie Andrew Goldstein saved 16 shots, including a breakaway.

Girls ice hockey

No. 7 Shrewsbury 2, No. 26 Bishop Stang 1: Freshman Paige O’Donnell and junior Mia Ryder scored third-period goals, as the seventh-seeded Colonials (12-4-5) defeated No. 26 Bishop Stang (8-11-2) in the Division 1 state tournament first-round at NorthStar Ice Sports on Wednesday. The Colonials advanced to meet the winner of Thursday’s game between No. 10 Bishop Feehan and No. 23 Reading on Friday at 5:30 p.m. back at NorthStar. Lauren Albertson, Blair Fay and Kealy Fay each added an assist for the Colonials, while Risa Montoya saved 13 shots.

No. 1 Notre Dame (Hingham) 7, No. 32 Franklin 1: Kaitlin Johnson found the net for the Panthers (7-14-1) from line mates Lily Santiago and Bridget Haggerty in the Division 1 Round of 32 on Wednesday.

No. 3 Lincoln-Sudbury 5, No. 30 Arlington Catholic 0: Harper Friedholm put away two goals for the Warriors (18-2-1) at Valley Sports Arena in the Division 1 Round of 32 on Wednesday. L-S will host either No. 14 Belmont or No. 19 Billerica in the Sweet 16.
