Webb School hires Sewanee's Brody Curry to take over girls basketball program

Webb School - Bell Buckle announced the hiring of Brody Curry as its new girls basketball coach on Friday. Brody comes to the school after one season as the women's coach at Sewanee: The University of the South.

A 2017 graduate of Sewanee, Curry takes over a program that was built into a statewide and national power by former coach Matthew Shewmake, who resigned in June to head Montverde Academy — the No. 1 high school girls basketball team in the country this past season according to MaxPreps.

"From the outside looking in, it’s easy to see that Webb is a special community," Curry said. "I can’t wait for my family to jump in and build new relationships. I’m looking forward to serving however I can."

Curry spent the past four seasons at Sewanee, first as an assistant coach with the men's program where he oversaw recruiting, player development, the weight-lifting program and promotional media. He took over the women's program at the start of the 2022-23 season but the team struggled through a 4-22 season.

He played basketball at Sewanee from 2013-2017 and was captain of the team through the 2015-2017 seasons. He was chosen All-Conference in both his junior and senior years.

At Webb, Curry will try to keep the success rolling after the program's third straight TSSAA Division II-A state championship in March. Webb finished 32-4 this past season, beating Middle Tennessee Christian 73-43 in the state title game.

However, the Lady Feet will move up to Division II-AA starting this season after headmaster Ken Cheeseman asked the TSSAA's Board of Control to move up to relieve tension among DII-A coaches and administrators due to the program's overwhelming success and the bolstering of out of state and in some cases international transfers during their three-year run.

"I’m excited and thankful to be a part of investing in these girls and continuing to move Webb basketball forward," Curry said.

Webb was ranked 11th nationally by MaxPreps after the 2022-23 season and produced six Power 5 signees, including two who signed with LSU in point guard, and Miss Basketball winner, Angelica Velez and center Aalyah Del Rosario. Shewmake went 91-12 in three seasons at Webb.
