Watertown and Aberdeen area athletes for notable performances in the past week

It's the end of another week and time to honor some of the best performers for the Watertown and Aberdeen area for May 6-12.

Let's get started.

Boys Track and Field

Boaz Raderschadt, Watertown — Raderschadt recorded personal-best throws to win both the boys' shot put (57-8) and discus (165-8) on Saturday in the Eastern South Dakota Conference Track and Field Championships at Brookings.

Sean Seurer, Jhett Simon and Carter Luikens, Potter County — The trio each ran on the winning 400 (46.19), 800 (1:34.82) and 1,600-meter (3:42.18) relays in the Pierre Capital City Qualifier.

Zac VanMeeteren, Hamlin — VanMeeteren topped the field in the 200 (22.94) and 400 (51.46) dashes and also ran on the winning 400 (44.85) relay in the Lake Central Conference meet. Meeteren also won the 100 (11.33), 200 (22.87) and 400 (52.14) and ran on the winning 400 (45.57) relay in the Northeast Conference meet.

Micah Holien, Great Plains Lutheran — Holien led the Panthers to their 18th-straight Eastern Coteau Conference title by winning the 100 (11.43) and 200 (24.94) dashes and running on the winning 1,600 (3:39.63) relay. Holien also won the 100 (11.7), 200 (24.12) and 400 (52.9) dashes in the Mustang Invitational at Webster.

Bryce Hawkinson and Ben Suther, Britton-Hecla —The Braves won the 400 (47.86), 800 (1:42.51), medley (4:04.07) and 3,200 (9.11.84) relays in the ECC meet. Hawkinson and Suther each ran on three of the winning relays.

ESD Track: Brandon Valley's girls and Harrisburg's boys capture team championships in conference meet

Maxwell Kulesa, Ipswich — Kulesa led Ipswich's boys to their seventh-straight Lake Region Conference title by winning the 200 dash (24.31) and running on the winning 400 (45.69) and 800 (1:39) relays.

Logan LaBrie, Hitchcock-Tulare — Won the 200 dash (25.05) and ran on the winning 400 (47.67) and 800 relays (1:37.82) in the 281 Conference meet.

Mitchell Guthmiller, Donovan Rose and Brock Christopherson, Sioux Valley — The Cossacks won the boys division in the Big East Conference meet with Guthmiller winning the high jump (6-1) and running on the winning 1,600 (3:44.44), 3,200 (8:35.3) and medley (3:48.12) relays. Rose won the 100 (11.14) dash and the 110 (15.4) and 300 (43.85) hurdles.

Brayden Sumption, Frederick Area — In the Mustang Invite at Webster, Sumption won the long jump (19-9.25) and also ran on the winning 1,600 (3:37.91) and 3,200 (8:39.72) relays).

Girls Track and Field

Ciara Frank and Gracie Rife, Aberdeen Central — Frank won the high jump (5-5), took second in the long jump (18-0) and fourth in the 100 hurdles (15.64) on Saturday in the Eastern South Dakota Conference Track and Field Championships at Brookings. Rife was second in the 100 dash (12.49) and fourth in the 200 (25.73) and anchored the winning 400 (50.26) relay team that included Keyana Stillman, Lucy Fritz and Kamdyn Borge. Frank and and Rife also ran on the Golden Eagles' runner-up 800 (1:43.69) team that included Stillman and Madison Hochstetter.

Malia Kranz, Watertown — Kranz won the discus (124-1) and took fourth in the shot put (39-9) on Saturday in the Eastern South Dakota Conference Track and Field Championships at Brookings.

Sierra Wenzl and Ella Kopplin, MIlbank — Wenzl and Kopplin helped Milbank win the girls division again in the Northeast Conference Meet. Wenzl won the 100 (12.92), 200 (27.79) and 400 (1:01.06) and also ran on the winning 1,600 (4:16.17) relay. Kopplin won the 800 (2:34.08) and ran the winning 1,600 and 3,200 (9:59.81) relays.

Halle Bauer, Abby Kjenstad, Katherine Prahl and Sophie Kannas, Great Plains Lutheran — The Panthers won their 14th-straight ECC title with Bauer winning the 800 (2:32.07), 1,600 (5:41.35) and 3,200 (12:16.23) relays. Kannas won the 100 (12.8) and 200 dashes (28.02) and ran on the winning 400 (54.48) and 800 (1:59.58) relays. Kjenstad won the high (4-10), long (15-0.5) and triple (32-10) jumps and also ran on the winning 800 relay. Prahl also ran on the 400 and 800 relays and broke the tape in the 100 (16.93) and 300 (51.54) hurdles.

NEC, BEC Track: Highlights from the NEC meet at Sisseton and the BEC meet at Baltic

Adison Moore, Iroquois-Lake Preston — Moore won the 100 (12.61) and 200 (26.91) dashes and also ran on the winning 800 relay (time not available) in the 281 Conference meet.

Ella Boekelheide, Northwestern — Boekelheide took the 400 dash (1:00.13) and the 800 (2:24.56) and 1,600 (5:06.86) runs in the Lake Region Conference meet.

Sofia Losure, Frederick Area — Losure won the 300 hurdles (52.05) and high jump (4-8) and also ran on the winning 1,600 relay (4:20.97) in the Lake Region Conference meet.

Adison Renkly and Maci Licht, Sioux Valley — Renkly won the 100 hurdles (16.08) and ran on the winning 400 (54.03) and medley (4:43.76) and Licht ran on the winning 1,600 (4:26.39), 3,200 (10:08.58) and medley (4:43.76) to help the Cossacks defend their title in the Lake Central Conference meet. Renkly also won the 100 hurdles (16.5) and ran on the winning medley relay (4:20.97) to help the Cossacks win the Big East Conference title.

Breanna Jochim of Herreid-Selby Area, Adison Moore of Iroquois-Lake Preston, Shawnteah La Croix of Aberdeen Christian and Brooklyn Helm of Herreid-Selby Area near the finish in the girls' 100-meter dash during the Waubay-Summit Mustang Invitational track and field meet on Friday, May 10, 2024 at Webster. Moore was first, Jochim second, La Croix third and Helm fourth.

Shawnteah La Croix, Aberdeen Christan — La Croix won the 100 (12.92) and long jump (16-3) and ran on the winning 400 (52.83) relay in the LRC meet.

Ryli Thompson, Mobridge-Pollock — Thompson won the 200 (26.9) and 400 (1:01.31) dashes and also ran on the winning 800 (1:48.97) in the Central South Dakota Conference meet.

Emma Schlachter, Paige Ahlemeier and Dannika Kaup, Potter County — Potter County won the girls division title in the Central South Dakota Conference meet with Schlachter (800 run, 2:24.78), Ahlemeier (3,200 run, 13:01.43) and Kaup (300 hurdles, 47.92) each winning events and running on the winning 1,600 (4:12.62) and 3,200 (10:11.56) relays.

Chloe Raw, Arlington —Raw won the 100 and 200 dashes at the Alcester-Hudson Invite and the Dolphin Relays. She ran 12.57 in the 100 and 25.58 in the 200 at Alcester and 12.03 in the 100 and 24.86 in the 200 at the Dolphin Relays,.

Boys Tennis

Justin Remmers, Skyler Stanton and Matthew Bertsch, Watertown — Remmers took second at No. 3 singles and Stanton (No. 5) and Bertsch (No. 6) each placed third to lead the Arrows to a fifth-place finish in the Eastern South Dakota Conference tournament. Remmers and Stanton also took third at No. 2 doubles. Remmers also won 10-1 at No. 3 singles, Stanton 10-5 at No. 5 and Bertsch 10-1 at No. 6 in an 8-1 dual win over Aberdeen Central. Remmers and Stanton also won 10-3 at No. 2 doubles.

Mason Ligon and Dawson Pederson, Aberdeen Central — Ligon won the consolation championship at No. 2 singles to lead the Golden Eagles in the ESD tournament. The Golden Eagles closed out their regular season with 9-0 and 8-1 dual losses to O'Gorman and Brandon Valley, respectively. Pederson's 10-9 (7-4 tiebreaker) win at No. 3 singles was the lone win for Aberdeen Central.

Palmer Johnson, Gannon May and Landon Zikmund, Aberdeen Roncalli — The Cavaliers closed out their regular season with a 9-0 win over Milbank and losses to Brandon Valley (6-3) and O'Gorman (7-0). Johnson and May each went 2-1 at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively. Zikmund won a pair of matches with different partners at No. 2 doubles.

Girls Golf

Olivia Braun, Kyley Wirebaugh and Emma Dohrer, Aberdeen Central — The Golden Eagles took second in the Mitchell Invitational with a 336 score. Braun took fourth (80), Wirebaugh fifth (81) and Dohrer seventh (84).

Avery Palmquist and Gabi Olson, Watertown — The Arrows took third in the Mitchell Invite with a 340 score. Palmquist placed sixth with an 81 and Olson eighth with an 84.

Claire Crawford, Aberdeen Roncalli — Crawford shot a 90 and finished ninth in the Madison Invitational.

Softball

Jade Lund, Lauryn Hirsch, Aleia Johnston, Kinsley Van Gilder and Alexa Brown, Watertown — The Arrows beat Sturgis 15-4 with the help of a grand slam homer by Hirsch and two hits, two runs and two RBIs apiece by Johnston and Van Gilder, who also homered. Lund went 3-for-4 and Van Gilder tossed five innings of three-hit relief in Watertown's 10-9 walkoff win over Rapid City Stevens. Brown went the distance for the win against Sturgis. The Arrows (10-7) closed out the week with a10-0 loss to Sioux Falls Washington.

Reese Comstock, Addison Ward and Arylie Waldo Aberdeen Central — The Golden Eagles swept Mobridge-Pollock 8-4 and 11-6 Comstock and Ward going 2-for-3 in each game. Ward had a triple in one game and a double in the other. Waldo went 2-for-3 in Game 1 against Mobridge-Pollock, 2-for-4 in a 15-8 win over Sturgis and the team's lone hit in a 12-0 loss to Rapid City Stevens.

Sophia and Grace Overland and Elsy Larsen, Mobridge-Pollock — The Tigers beat Milbank 17-0 and 12-4 with Sophia Overland going 5-for-9 at the plate with a double, homer, six runs and nine RBIs and Larsen 6-for-7 with three runs and five RBIs. Grace Overland tossed a four-inning no-hitter in the 17-0 win. Sophia Overland also hit a 3-run homer in an 8-4 loss to Aberdeen Central.

Addisyn Krause and Kennedi Sayler, Milbank — Krause went 3-for-3 in a 12-4 loss to Mobridge-Pollock. Sayler went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs in an 11-1 loss to Sisseton and 4-for-4 with two doubles, three runs scored and four RBIs in a 19-18 loss to Sisseton.

Katrina Hagberg, Kennedy Harmon and Rylynn Streich, Deuel — Hagberg fired a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts and Harmon went 2-for-3 with three runs and three RBIs in a 15-0 win over Sisseton. Hagbert also fanned 15 batters in a 9-7 win over Colman-Egan. Streich drove in two runs with a double and a single against Colman-Egan.

Abby Axtell and Zaylee Lantgen, Sioux Valley — Axtell went 3-for-3 at the plate and went the distance on the mound for the win in a 10-3 victory over Redfield and 2-for-2 with three RBIs in a 15-4 win over Oldham-Ramona-Rutland. Lantgen went 2-for-3 with a double and three runs scored and also got the win against ORR.

Elliot Hortness, Isabelle Herrick and Kate Meyer, Sisseton — Sisseton capped a sweep over Milbank with a 19-18 win in the second game. Hortness went 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs; Herrick 3-for-4 with three runs and Meyer 3-for-4 with four RBIs in the game.

Chloe Zens, Redfield — Zens went 3-for-4 with two doubles in a 10-3 loss to Sioux Valley.

Harley and Sony Johnson, Arlington — The Cardinals split with Elkton-Lake Benton, winning 5-4 and losing 8-7. Harley had a game-tying two-run double during a four-run fourth inning that erased a 4-1 deficit in the opener. She also went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and two RBIs in the second. Her younger sister Sony went 2-for-3 with a triple in Game 2.

Baseball

Kaden Rylance, Nash Berg, Mitch Olson and Marcus Rabine, Watertown Post 17 — Post 17 (9-2) dropped the final two games of a weekend series against perennial state power Rapid City Post 22 on Saturday and Sunday, but did manage a rare win (5-2) over Post 22 in Saturday's opener. Rylance struck out six in four innings and Berg three in three innings of relief and Olson went 2-for-2 at the plate. Olson also was 2-for-3 in a 10-0 loss on Saturday and smacked a double in a 12-2 loss on Sunday. Rylance went 2-for-2 in Sunday's game. Rabine drove in runs with a single and a sacrifice fly in Saturday's win.

Phillip Zens and Cooper Eisenbeisz, Aberdeen Smittys — The Smittys opened their American Legion Baseball season by splitting a doubleheader against Lisbon, N.D. (winning 11-6 and losing 4-3) and also won an exhibition game against the Aberdeen Circus amateur baseball team 13-12 in 10 innings on Sunday. Zens drove in three runs with two hits in the win over Lisbon. Eisenbeisz went 3-for-4 with two triples, three runs and three RBIs against the Circus. He tripled leading off the bottom of the 10th and scored the winning run on a wild pitch.

Colby Dunker and Bradin Althoff, Groton Area — Althoff went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Dunker tripled and drove in three runs in an 8-4 high school win over Redfield Area.

Elijah Morrissette and Cooper Zens, Redfield Area — Morrissette went 3-for-3 with two doubles and four RBIs in an 8-4 loss to Groton Area and then smacked a two-run homer and tossed a five-inning no-hitter with nine strikeouts in an 11-1 win over Sioux Valley.

Gavin Lane and Alec Mikkelsen, Warner-Ipswich-Northwestern — Lane went 3-for-3 with a double and also fanned 10 batters in six innings in a 14-4 win over Oldham-Ramona-Rutland. Mikkelsen went 3-for-4 with a double.

Watson Grantham and Jyler Tharaldsen, Hamlin Area — Grantham and Tharaldsen each singled in an 8-3 loss to Tri-Valley.
