What to watch at the Greater Lansing Honor Roll track and field meet

Some of the top track and field athletes in Greater Lansing will descend on Waverly High School on Tuesday to showcase their talents.

The annual Greater Lansing Honor Roll track meet will serve as a final tune-up for area athletes as they get ready to head to the Grand Rapids area to compete in Michigan High School Athletic Association state meets Saturday.

The field events begin at 5:30 p.m. and the running events start at 6:30 p.m.

Here’s a few things to watch:

One of the state's top throwers

Pewamo-Westphalia's Gavin Nurenberg competes in the shot put event during the Division 3 state track and field finals on Saturday, June 3, 2023, at Kent City High School.

Past area throwing standouts like Carson City-Crystal’s Zane Forist (Michigan) and Olivet’s Payton Otto (Michigan State) have delivered strong performances at this event in their final track meets in Greater Lansing in recent years. Could Pewamo-Westphalia’s Gavin Nurenberg be the next to do so?

Nurenberg is the reigning honor roll and Division 3 state champion in the shot put and was the runner-up in the discus at both meets last spring. The senior enters Tuesday’s Honor Roll meet with the top area marks in both events with his throw of 60 feet, 5 inches in the shot put and 160-3 in the discus.

Nurenber has been one of the state’s best throwers this spring. He owns second-best throw in the state in the shot put, just four inches shy of the top mark of 60-9 set by Lawton’s Mason Mayne. Nurenberg ranks 12th in the discus.

Catch some defending state champions

Nurenberg is among the defending state champions expected to compete Tuesday. Ovid-Elsie junior Tryce Tokar won the pole vault state title in Division 3 as a freshman and sophomore and has the area’s top mark this spring at 14-10.

Corunna’s Wyatt Bower (Division 2, long jump), Mason’s Tyler Baker (D2, 100 hurdles) and AJ Martel (D2, 300 hurdles), Bath’s Destiny McDaniels (D3, 100 hurdles), Olivet’s Emily Peters (D3, 300 hurdles) and Portland St. Patrick’s Rylee Scheurer (D4, 200) are among the reigning individual state champions who could be in action Tuesday.

Tuesday’s meet provides an opportunity to get a glimpse of several senior athletes slated to continue their running careers at Division I programs.

Mason’s Baker (Michigan), Pewamo-Westphalia’s Collin Farmer (Oakland), Mason’s Meghan Ford (Michigan State), DeWitt’s Drew Novak (Michigan State), Lansing Catholic’s Tessa Roe (DePaul) and Portland St. Patrick’s Scheurer (Oakland) are among the standout senior athletes set to compete at the D-I level.

Novak is one of the top sprinters and owns the area’s fastest time in the 100-meter dash. Farmer owns the top time in the area in 1,600 and Baker has been the fastest in the 110 high hurdles. Roe has the second-best time in the 1,600 and 3,200.
