Washington Commanders at New England Patriots: Predictions, picks and odds for NFL Week 9 game

Two teams with less than ideal records will hope to get back on track against each other when the Washington Commanders (3-5) visit the New England Patriots (2-6).

It was a valiant effort but Washington once again fell just short against the Philadelphia Eagles in a one-possession home loss. It was the second straight loss against a divisional opponent, but the offense looked bright again with Sam Howell throwing for nearly 400 yards after a rough performance against the Giants.

It was going to be a challenge for the Patriots to keep up the Miami Dolphins, and it resulted in a 14-point loss in Florida. The offense looked better, but they were dealt a major blow when breakout receiver Kendrick Bourne suffered a torn ACL, leaving New England with more questions in the fight toward playoff contention.

Steelers vs. Titans | Chiefs vs. Dolphins | Falcons vs. Vikings | Ravens vs. Seahawks | Browns vs. Cardinals | Packers vs. Rams | Texans vs. Buccaneers | Patriots vs. Commanders | Saints vs. Bears | Panthers vs. Colts | Raiders vs. Giants | Eagles vs. Cowboys | Bengals vs. Bills | Jets vs. Chargers

Lorenzo Reyes: Patriots 20, Commanders 15

Washington went full sell mode on defense and its defense will take a massive hit for that. That’s why, even with the Patriots' offense stuck in neutral for most of the season, it’s hard to see New England not clearing this line at home.

Tyler Dragon: Patriots 21, Commanders 20

The Commanders had a fire sale at the NFL trade deadline. The departures of starting defensive ends Chase Young and Montez Sweat signal a reset for Washington. The Patriots have played better as of late and aren’t waving the white flag on the season just yet.

Safid Deen: Commanders 24, Patriots 14

Both teams are trekking to nowhere this season, but Sam Howell’s four-touchdown day against the Eagles last week bodes well for the Commanders against Mac Jones and the Patriots.

Victoria Hernandez: Commanders 18, Patriots 17

This is the Inconsistency Bowl. The Commanders traded away Chase Young and Montez Sweat, which might be a fresh start or might be bad. Sam Howell scored a career-high four touchdowns in a loss to the Eagles last week and he has plenty of tools to throw to. The Patriots, on the other hand, lack identity and any star power, so will struggle against a Washington team who knows how to get things clicking.

Jordan Mendoza: Commanders 20, Patriots 17

Washington has been tough to figure out, having great games one week and then a dud the next. They'll get a stern test from a good Patriots defense, but New England will want to take advantage of a depleted defense. But they aren't able to generate any big plays to match the potential the Commanders have. Washington gets its first win against New England since 2003.
