Warwick wins Division I gymnastics championship; La Salle's Horrigan is all-around champ

PROVIDENCE — Riley Bromage recovered in four months from a punctured lung suffered on the vault and Madison Long rehabbed an ACL tear.

Just qualifying for the Rhode Island Interscholastic League gymnastics state championship was a hurdle for the team from Warwick.

“I told them to take it week-by-week and we squeaked out a couple of wins in the beginning that helped kind of heal them a little bit more on those injuries,” Warwick coach Candis Kowalik said. “Then the second half of the season, they really pulled through on some close wins.”

The Pilgrim/Toll Gate co-op needed its stars on the final event, the vault, as Bromage conquered her attempt with a 9.2 finish and Long snagged a 9.25. The pair, who finished 2-3 in all-around, and Warwick, edged South Kingstown 138.775 to 138.025 for the Division I crown on Saturday at the Murray Center.

“I didn't know if I was even going to be competing in anything,” Bromage said. “Being able to be up there in second place, and first as a team, was really cool.”

The Rebels were within distance the entire meet, and third-place Barrington, netted a 137.450 final. Long also hurt her ankle on vault, but gutted out another try before finishing third in the event.

“I just really wanted to push through for my team,” Long said. “I just kept going, I felt it on my ankle and landed [the dismount] for my team.”

Bromage said of the title margin: “We had a feeling [after vault], but we still weren't sure because it was so close all year. And even today, the score was so close, it was hard to tell, but in the end we did it.”

Warwick also won the Division I title in 2022.

“I’m just filled with emotions,” Long said. “I was so proud of all the girls and how hard we've worked, especially [Bromage]; she had an injury earlier this season and I'm just really proud of everyone.”

Horrigan sticks the beam to win all-around

Lauren Horrigan, not by design, waited until the last moment to seize the balance beam. The La Salle star’s best event landed her on top.

“I just had to have that mindset that, even though I came in first [in the rankings entering the championship], that doesn't necessarily mean anything, so I just have to do my best,” Horrigan said.

Horrigan landed a 9.5 on the beam, a first-place finish, and gold on the bars (9.25). She also finished second in vault with a 9.3 attempt.

“She came in ready,” La Salle coach Jill Clough said. “The last couple of weeks have really just been mental management, preparing mentally that things might go wrong and being smart.”

Horrigan edged Bromage by less than a point for the all-around crown.

“I love my team so much,” Horrigan said of what she will remember. “I love everybody on it, all my friends, just being with them and doing what I love.”

Portsmouth captures Division II title

Rowan Snyder entered the championship seventh overall in all-around average. The junior beat her average by nearly a full point (36 total score) and finished fourth. She placed third in bars and floor and fourth in beam.

The Patriots (135.950 overall points) topped second-place Middletown by four points to earn their first championship since going back-to-back in 2005-06.
