Malloree Nichols, Sam Harris are the Register's Athletes of the Week for June 4-10

Waterloo East softball player Malloree Nichols and Urbandale baseball player Sam Harris have been voted the Des Moines Register Athletes of the Week for June 4-10 by Register readers.

Nichols won Female Athlete of the Week after receiving 59.61% of the vote (8,325). Sigourney softball player Carly Goodwin came in second with 38.08% (5,318).

Nichols had a huge night for Waterloo East during its 19-9 victory over Sioux City West on Saturday.

Nichols went 6-for-6 with a double, homer, three runs scored and eight RBIs for the Trojans.

Harris won Male Athlete of the Week with 21.22% of the vote. He edged Knoxville baseball player Trenton Kingery (20.82%) and Hampton-Dumont-CAL baseball player Jaxon Moats (20.41%) for first.

Harris led an explosive Urbandale hitting attack during a 21-6 Jayhawk victory over Ankeny in five innings on June 8.

Harris went 5-for-5 with a double, two home runs and eight RBIs in the win. He led the state in home runs heading into this week's action.
