Central track and field athlete wins Maps Credit Union High School Athlete of the Week

Central track and field standout Ryan Burgett is the Maps Credit Union High School Athlete of the Week, winning a poll voted on by readers.

Burgett clocked the third-fastest 300 meter hurdle time in the state this season when he won the Mid-Willamette Conference title with a personal-best of 39.27 seconds on May 11.

Here is another look at the other nominees this week.

Mihaly Akpamgbo, West Salem track and field

West Salem senior Mihaly Akpamgbo swept the district sprint titles at the Central Valley Conference Championships. He won the 100 meters in 10.63 seconds to earn his third consecutive league title in the event. Akpamgbo also won the 200 in 21.65. He ranks second in the state in both events this season.

JD Arthur, Silverton track and field

Silverton junior JD Arthur placed second in the 800 meters with a personal best time of 1 minute, 54.94 seconds at the Mid-Willamette Conference Championships. That's the sixth-fastest time in the state this season.

Hap Freres, Blanchet Catholic track and field

Blanchet Catholic senior Hap Freres won the Special District 2A 800 meter title with a time of 2 minutes, 1.93 seconds. That's the second-fastest time in the state this season among 2A athletes. Freres also placed second at the district meet in the 400 meters with a time of 51.12 seconds.

Tatum Fleming, Blanchet Catholic track and field

Blanchet Catholic junior Tatum Fleming recorded the second-best long jump mark (16 feet, 4.5 inches) and triple jump mark (34 feet, 9.75 inches) by a 2A athletes in the state this season during the Special District 2 Championships. She won district titles in both events. Fleming also finished third in the 100 with a season-best time of 12.90 seconds that is the third-fastest among 2A athletes this season.

Olivia Jolivette, West Salem track and field

West Salem senior Olivia Jolivette racked up 30 points for the Titans at the Central Valley Conference Championships by winning three district titles. She won at 100 meters in 12.42 seconds, 200 meters in 26.11 seconds, and in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 2 inches. Jolivette also ran the second leg of the Titans' first-place 4x100 relay team.

Amanda McArthur, Central track and field

Central senior Amanda McArthur swept the horizontal jumps at the Mid-Willamette Conference Championships. She won the long jump with a personal-best mark of 16 feet, 5.5 inches, and the triple jump with a season-best of 35 feet, 8.5 inches. She now ranks third in the state in the triple jump among 5A athletes.

Caleb McGraw, Salem Academy track and field

Salem Academy senior Caleb McGraw won the shot put (48 feet, 9 inches) and discus (139 feet, 9 inches) at the Special District 2 Championships. Both marks were personal bests. McGraw now owns the top shot put mark in the state among 2A athletes and ranks second in the discus.

Amyah Miranda, Cascade softball

Cascade freshman catcher Amyah Miranda helped the Cougars clinch the Oregon West Conference title with several big performances at the plate. During an 8-4 win over Stayton on May 8, she went 2-for-3 with a double and a home run. One day later, she went 2-for-3 with a pair of homers and five RBI in a 14-7 loss to Newport.

Elijah Willis, Silverton track and field

Silverton junior Elijah Willis posted the top javelin mark among 5A athletes this season — and the seventh best in the state regardless of classification — when he won the Mid-Willamette Conference Championships with a throw of 177 feet, 7 inches.
