Vote for The Gardner News Athlete of the Week, Jan. 29-Feb.3

In last week's vote, Sadie Bauver of Murdock basketball took the cake for Athlete of the Week. She earned 48.49% – 20,103 votes total – for two games in which she scored 17 points.

Behind Bauver in the poll was Gardner's Sokari Jenkins, who finished first in the 2 mile at a meet at Wachusett Regional.

Spotlight Shoutout

Gardner-area indoor track and field teams competed in the Mid-Wach League Championships over the weekend. Here's a look at the local athletes that won events at the meet.

Boys Basketball

Aiden Walter, Monty Tech

Monty Tech defeated Worcester Tech, 51-49, on February 2. The offense was led by Aiden Walter, who scored 17 points. Ben Gosselin added 10 and Mike Cannon dropped 9 points in the victory.

Zach Swan, Gardner

Swan scored 13 points in Gardner's 56-38 win over West Boylston on February 2.

Girls Basketball

Paige Gadarowski, Monty Tech

Gadarowski scored 9 points in the Bulldogs game on January 30. Her efforts helped lead to a 48-6 victory against Parker Charter. Later in the week, she scored 12 points in a 46-37 win over Main South.

Brianna Whitelaw, Quabbin

In a 47-31 win over Lunenburg, Whitelaw scored 11 points to help lead the Panthers. Teammates Meaghan Doyle and Mia Ducos each contributed 10 points.

Boys Hockey

Cullan White, Gardner

White scored two goals and added two assists in Gardner's 5-3 win against Leominster on January 31. Other contributors included Drew St. Peter and Gavin Richard.

Girls Hockey

Rachel Simkewicz, Leominster

The Oakmont junior scored two goals and had an assist in Leominster's 3-2 win over East Bridgewater on January 29.

Swimming

Alex Olson, Gardner

Olson placed first in the 100 butterfly in the Mid-Wach Championship at Tantasqua Regional on February 1. The Wildcats finished 8th overall out of 12 teams with a score of 126.

Ella Reeves, Gardner

Reeves took first place in the 100 breaststroke at the Mid-Wach Championship at Tantasqua on February 1. Gardner finished 6th as a team with a score of 179.

Alpine Ski

Tai Sayarath, Lunenburg

The 8th grader, who attends the Narragansett Regional school district, came in second place at the alpine ski competition on February 1. Sayarath is now ranked fourth in the league through four races.
